No disrespect to Sheffield but this was always essentially one of our pre-season games. Good to get the win and slowly start to build as the season goes on. Conditions will have made it a little bit tougher and made it good preparation ahead of the SL opener.
It was great that Harvie Hill was rewarded for his good start to the year. A big year from him will hopefully go some way towards mitigating the loss of Ethan Havard for the next couple of months.

A home draw is what matters.Wiganer Ted wrote: ↑Fri Feb 07, 2025 9:21 pm Listened to radio commentary via Wigan tv. Very good from Joe Mills and Bilko. Sounded very windy and no doubt the place lived up to its "Ice Station Zebra" nickname.
Given the circumstances a good win and 8 kicks from 8 by Keighran is excellent.
Draw for the next round a week tomorrow. Let's hope for a home one!

I was very surprised that Mitch Clark remembered me. He came over to where we were sat & asked how I was. Still think he wasn’t given a good enough chance with us but what do I know.
I don’t know how some of the other players fared but when Kaide Ellis had spoke to me I mentioned the massive cuts on his knees!
Player welfare??

Wigan Warriors player ratings as three score 8/10 and forwards impress
Wigan Warriors beat Sheffield Eagles 48-12 to book their spot in the next round of the Challenge Cup on Friday night. The Warriors were tested but they managed to score eight tries on the night at Olympic Legacy Park and pick up the win on the eve of the new Super League season.
Here’s our player ratings from the contest.
Jai Field: Lively throughout with his running game and got Wigan moving in the right direction with the first try of the game. 7
Zach Eckersley: Took his try well and handled himself against an experienced Sheffield Eagles backline. 6
Adam Keighran: Kicked extremely well from the tee despite the conditions and got himself a try, too. 7
Liam Farrell: Steady away in the centre spot. 6
Liam Marshall: Turned provider to set up French and played a key role in Eckersley’s effort on what was a strong night for him. 7
Bevan French: Got over and claimed a couple of assists on the night. Still a little rusty at times but showed glimpses of brilliance too. 7
Harry Smith: Useful with the ball in hand and created enough to be pleased with his efforts. 7
Harvie Hill: A solid showing from the man who has caught the eye in pre-season training. 7
Kruise Leeming: A big stint and some smart play around the ruck, he looked more than ready for the start of the season. 8
Luke Thompson: Helped get Wigan off to a strong start in South Yorkshire. 7
Junior Nsemba: Asked questions throughout the contest with his ferocious running game and got himself over in the second half. 8
Sam Walters: Had couple of handling errors in the first half but grew into the contest and carried really well. 7
Kaide Ellis: A steady showing through the middle and scored Wigan Warriors’ last try of the game. 7
Patrick Mago: Got through a fair amount of work in attack and defence. 7
Liam Byrne: Looked really strong through the middle of the park and powered over for a try. 8
Tyler Dupree: Sinbinned at the end of the first half and probably could have been more disciplined. 6
Tom Forber: Lively during his second half stint and constantly looked to create. 7

Peet: Job done
MATT PEET HAS REFLECTED ON HIS TEAMS PERFORMANCE FOLLOWING A 48-12 WIN AGAINST SHEFFIELD EAGLES IN THE THIRD ROUND OF BETFRED CHALLENGE CUP.
The Warriors scored eight tries from different scorers at Olympic Legacy Park as the Wigan boss enjoyed the victory on his 100th game in charge of the Cherry and Whites.
Reflecting on the win at full time, Peet said: “I liked the way we dealt with the fixture. Sheffield were committed throughout and we had to contend with a different pitch. Overall it was job done and we won’t dwell too much on what was a unique match.”
Prasing the performance of his middles, Peet said: “Our middle unit was good. When we played direct and had our big men rolling onto the ball was when we looked at our best and had our most successful periods.”
On Sheffield Eagles, Peet said: “There’s a lot of things to respect and admire about Sheffield. They stuck with us for large parts and they had quality when they moved the ball around the field. They certainly tested us and I’m sure Craig will be happy with what he saw from his side.”
The Warriors start the Betfred Super League against Leigh Leopards at The Brick Community Stadium in what will be the Greatest Opening Night.
“It’s going to be an interesting game and one that will be very different to tonight. There will be a big crowd and both teams will come into a super intense game full of enthusiasm. There’s so much planned around the fixture and the Borough is really going to come out in numbers for it. It will be a fantastic start the Super League season.”
Proving an injury update ahead of the Super League opener, Peet said: “Jake [Wardle] and Abbas [Miski] will both be in contention but Ethan [Havard] will definitely be out for a while after pulling his hamstring in training. We are waiting an opinion but it will be months rather than weeks. We are gutted for Ethan as he’s been training the house down.”
Next up for the Warriors it’s The Greatest Opening Night against Leigh Leopards this Thursday 13 February with a bumper night of entertainment. Tickets can still be purchased for the game online HERE, at The Brick Community Stadium Ticket Office or by calling 01942 311 111.

Just watched the game, and for once, I wouldn't disagree much with those player ratings.

Not a great game but a typical C Cup Tie between a SL team and Championship outfit.
Watching Sheffield you can see immediately why SL clubs send their young players on loan to Championship clubs. I'd imagine going from playing their own age group to open age grown men will be quite a shock.
As Matty says, Job Done! On to Thursday.
Got my season tickets/swipe cards but not my car park pass yet. Here's hoping.
Take care Josie.
