Could I ask, are you saying here that video ref. intervention may be a help as far as forward pass rulings are concerned. Or that, as this game is a fast flowing one, referees make mistakes and do miss forward passes - despite your recent protestation that they do not (for the Stains 1st try), (reading between your lines - unsureness which way hands are facing), I would say that they do, and more frequently that any referee is willing to admit!
I don't think the video referee can help with forward passes as they don't always have a view of them and if they do the angle is sometimes misleading.
Of course referees make mistakes and miss things, I'd be an idiot if I didn't admit that and I have never claimed they don't.
My point about Saints first try is that a flat pass made whilst running at speed will always look forward and every single opposing fan will scream the house down that it is forward. If the referee cannot see where the players hands were facing and there is a chance that the ball was played flat then shouldn't benefit of the doubt go to the attacking team? (Note - this is a question, not a statement).

but surely a forward pass is an infringment, and play shuold be stopped,if that passage of play leads to a try why cannot the ref pass it upstairs for the video ref to look at.he has the best view and the advantage of different camera angles, and from marks on the pitch can make a decision.

My list of errors was not exhaustive!
I take it from your posts that you are a Ref or offical off some kind & if you are i take my hat off to you, because even though we have a go at Ref's & TJ we wouldnt have a game at all.But you must admit that it is cofuseing for supporters & players when the rule's are open to interpitation and each ref has got his own ie-quick taps, foward pass (hand's facing forward),ball reefing(was it wasnt it),play the balls. For me should be you can take quick tap or you cant not different to who is Reffing, also if ball goes forward it is a forward pass(how is used to be in years gone by).You should also have to play the ball properly not just make an attempt (what one ref deems an attempt another may not). You should be able to steal the ball as this would cut out the was their or wasnt their a hand in there debate ie- tuesday nights game.Of course all this is IMO.

just something to ask you rob when sky are saying about the video ref cannot judge on forward passes because of the camera angle are they looking at the direction of the ball or are they looking at the position of the players hands because as you said and the rule book states it's more to do with the position of the players hands than the motion of the ball.

My point was raised by jammie in the next thread (cheers), by the way here is an interesting link which contradicts your comments about the forward pass/hands explanation. Further damaging the credibility/consistency of referees, if the links to rules like this are wrong!!!
