Matthew I think the salar cap kills any interest from rich foreign businessmen.

I kind of thought that it would be a reverse. We are limited by the upper limit of what we can spend - there is no minimum spend. Therefore the fact that there is finite amount for players wages means that more money can go to the owner/share holders.

If the club made £5 million - and can only spend 1.6 on players wages it gives a lot more scope for profit!

The sums you are talking though are chicken feed to the type of foreign owners being attracted to football. Sport is a plaything / a hobby for them. They expect to lose money.

I hope so - I find it hard to be optimistic recently! I for one am going to wait and see who our new owner/chairman is before I celebrate ML's departure.

Be interesting to see what phil clarke says in his weekly page on sky this week. After weeks/months of anti-Wigan sentiment, will he salute the man that made him a well paid player in the most successful RL team of all time or will he happily dance on his grave?

It is not as wonderful as some would seem to believe. Nobody can say if it will be good or bad until we know who wants to buy the club and what they are about etc.

Wealth whilst not important in terms of players wages etc is important in terms of what the person buying the club seeks. Very wealthy people lie Whelan and beyond him are not seeking profit, nor do they expect to recoup all their financial outlays. The problem you get and it has happened in RFL an awful lot are people who whilsy wealthy compared to you and I do not have a vast fortune to lose and at some point when they decide to walk away they want to recover any money they have invested in the club. Ten bob millionaires / fur coat and no nickers millionaires bankrupt professional sporting clubs. Whatsmore, these are the type of people who are attracted to RFL as they see it as an affordable way to become a Big Time Charlie.

Age and free time are important. The Gang of 4 including ML were at the right age and combined had sufficient time to devote a lot of energy to reviving Wigan RLFC in the early 80's. The problems started when they aged and gradually left to leave one man at the helm. That situation has never truly been rectified albeit they recently attempted to do so with 'token' directors being appointed.

A truly wealthy owner with youth, time and energy surrounded by a small but zealous group of directors would be ideal. Failing that, Whelan may be much better.

As much as i have longed for Mo to GO and i am ecstatic that he has done so i have never wanted rid of Whelan.

He has only ever done two things i did not like.

1. He backed Mo to the hilt - Even pulling out of the last sale because Mo blocked it.

2. He would not get involved with our club and left everything to Mo.

I can't believe that someone with as much business sense as he must have would not have made a few changes.

All in All i think this is the chance to sort the club out and move us into the SL era at last.We have been trying to live through past glories.

Mine too, dont want woody at the helm self the righteous prick!
Count me in! If clarke takes over I predict "sack the board" protests to start pretty quickly.

He can stick to being an anti-Wigan sky/rfl lapdog!

Anyway - don't worry; it won't be. DW said he would only sell the club to a Wigan FAN and the cliff richard of RL is certainly NOT that

One aspect I am perplexed by. Apparently, ML is going to remain a director of the Latics. :conf:
