Hampo - as a tom boy me and my friend used to practice the Hampo catch which involved jumping as high as you could to catch the ball, this man could pluck the ball from anywhere and unfortunately was treated quite shabbily by the powers who decided to get rid of him in his testimonial year but he had the last laugh didn't he!

Rads - my god this man put his body on line for the club week in week out. Highlights are of course CC 2002 but also the Renouf to Rads moment at JJB to send us back to the top, I amongst nearly every other wigan fan was crying with him when that hooter went.

Old Smokey Joe - when he wanted to he just switched on and did something magical, his drop goals got us out of a few pickles to say the least!!

I will never forget the ashes at Elland road(or was it old trafford).
One all in the tests and this was our best chance to win the series. The atmosphere was one of the most electric I have ever been to (prior to the match)

up stepped Patch who managed to miss an australian player (Wendall Sailor?) not once not twice but three times and was down and out after 15 minutes. PAtch stayed down after the third try and got carried off - think it was more to do with shame than injury!!

hmmmmmmmmm ones ive seen, id go

Rads
Edwards
Richards

Think people do tend to overlook edwards because of his brilliance at 6 but he was a decent full back too. I think attacking wise ashton was fantastic just a shame his defence was crap. Anyone see by the way he scroed 41 tries in yawniun last year, how manys ritche got? lol!

IMO Edwards was never a full back and as far as a great 6, he was not one of those either. His game relied on other people making a break and him backing up, as a 6 you are expected to make the odd break by beating someone, Edwards never did this, yes he ran through gaps after being put through but he could never beat anyone or break a tackle. He was not brilliant at putting anyone through a gap either. Taking everything into account he would be playing for someone like Leigh if he was around now...

The team made Edwards.. Edwards did not make the team, something a 6 and 7 should be able to do!

So WW you're saying that Edwards wasnt good enough for Wigan and he'd rather be at Leigh instead? A bit controversial for the games most decorated player and the most talked about schoolboys since Boston.

No I didnt say he would rather be at Leigh, I said he would be playing for Leigh if he was around now as he would not have great players around him to help him score as many tries.

The most poignant and important statement ever made about Edwards was…. And if you ever hear this statement in the future about a player you may understand what I mean, is

He reads a game well!

Any so called great player who has that said about them and not much more tells you they have very little to offer on the creative side. In other words, they no what to do and when to do it… The problem is they cant do it themselves!

I would have to disagree WW. As a running stand-off he was amazing in the 86/7 Season IIRC. There is a game v Hull in the JPS Semi whereby he basically rescued the team from certain defeat with long range runs. Micron often used one of those breaks as the intro to their DVDs. One Wembley final v Halifax? shows a solo run too. He was also great at chip chases, kick throughs, Salford - RLCC Semi Final, Mud?

To be honest I think like many he played at less than 100% thereafter.

I do think he was a better 7 than a 6 but is it not credit to him that he could play both positions.

I always remember Wally Lewis saying, RL is a simple game of numbers, if the opposition have 4 defenders on the blind and you have 5 attackers, you go blind and so on and so on.

Edwards passing skill, reading the game needs no discussion. Likewise his kicking game.

For me Edwards was the most intelligent RL player I have ever watched and one of the most determined.

I take on board what you are saying and agree with some of what you write. I must point out though that it was a great team that made Edwards and there is no mistake in that I feel

OK time to start a new topic I think.
