I question his re-signing (Wane said a few weeks ago on Radio Mnachester he had a new deal).R Douglas wrote:Has anybody got any idea how much Bailey is on?
I seem to be the only one in our household who even questions whether Bailey should be re-signed, everyone else has blind loyalty to the fella.
I am never convinced players are on as much as people think but if he has re-signed people will assume it is on a reduced deal anyway.I seem to remember someone on here saying that he was on a major share of the salary cap, and if so I'm sure that a similar offer from Nobby would answer our questions.
You need to look at the squad and decide if we have 25 players already whose wages are likely above £50K. There is £50K extra on top of the £1.6m for junior players to make the odd appearance so pay anyone more than that means they must be one of the top 25 earners of the club.If true, it would appear that unless he's willing to take a fair cut in his wage to stay at Wigan, he'll be gone, as it leaves MM no salary cap head space to bring in anyone else if he doesn't. That's unless someone else on a big wage is going elsewhere?
Dave, thanks for the detailed reply, I guess a lot rests on what IL and SW have advised MM on, and what MM believes he can get from him (individually as much as for the team!).DaveO wrote:I question his re-signing (Wane said a few weeks ago on Radio Mnachester he had a new deal).R Douglas wrote:Has anybody got any idea how much Bailey is on?

Cons
He has a serious injury to get over - same as DV.
We have other back row forwards ready to step up, Mossop and Farrell.
He isn't a particularly great player either in the centres of the pack.
Takes an overseas quota spot (though not a none federation spot).
Pros
He is supposed to be a model pro and good talker respected by the younger players.
He knows when to give a penalty away i.e. is crafty when needed.
With Hock gone he adds some depth to the squad.
Overall I don't think the pros outweigh the cons. As a player he doesn't offer enough to take a quota spot or be one of our top 25 earning players

Regardless of his actual wage he will be one of the top 25 earners of the club. The £1.6m salary cap is split between 25 players. You can not for example pay 26 players an average wage of £61538 (£1.6m / 26) so re-signing him does limit the clubs maneuverability under the cap whether he is on £60K or £120K.

I have not done this exercise myself but it would not surprise me if with Bailey on board we have 25 players on over £50K and even if that meant we did not spend to the full £1.6m limit then MM would have no room for maneuver anyway.

Was at a Wigan Schools dinner at the DW on Friday night where IL gave the final after dinner speech. After a short word on his Wigan roots, he finished quite abruptly by saying that reliance on Wigan Schools developed players once worked in the past, and WILL work again in the future.
Maurice L had also spoken earlier about the importance of getting Joe Lydon and Andy Greg back into a Wigan shirt in the mid 80's, to build a core of his Wigan team. With Longy and Joynty in the room, you didn't have to look too far to realise where we've gone wrong in recent times, and where the core of our Team will come from in the future, when wages alone can not be the primary motivation.
MM has an excellent track record that was on show for all to see in the first 40 mins on Saturday, with both Inglis and Slater developed by him at Melbourne. IL talked about giving chances for up to 8 of the current academy and reserve squads in the coming years. What an opportunity they have!
In summary, I guess that Bailey would be a great influence and support for this development. The only question is if his individual fitness is to be relied upon.

I shall look forward to reading this. Mo and IL on the same platform sounds intriguing!R Douglas wrote: P.S. Will put a more detailed post together on Friday night's dinner when I get some time, as it was quite an uplifting night, where I think most men in the room will have come away feeling nothing but optimism for the future.
