I'd say if the team gets a settled half back pairing and he's not in it, then he should go on a recallable loan spell. If, as is likely, one or both of Field and Tommy break down early, he'll be playing most of the time so it's a moot point. I agree he needs to be regularly playing, and if he's in the first team behind our new pack, he should be able to do better than last season. If the pack goes well, all our attacking options should be much better (especially now we have a real threat capable of making his own chances in the centres in KPP!)

I think Smith could come good. We could very much regret letting him go. As Briers was let go by Saints, he will know from first hand experience the value of patience. He has shown plenty of glimpses of talent, it’s simply a matter of consistency. Given that Cust and Field may not stick around long, the upside from persevering with Smith could be huge.

I think people are entitled to have doubts, and that's not crucifying the lad. But he's a talent, for sure, and I hope he goes well this year, I think he has a fair wind behind him.

That’s a fair comment,he’s been thrust into the first team perhaps too early it happens in sport I’ll say though with Peet now in charge if anyone knows how to get the best out of him I suspect it’s Peet alongside Briers.

Time will tell.

Wigan half-back Harry Smith hails mentors Lee Briers and Tommy Leuluai

Wigan half-back Harry Smith says he has enjoyed learning from assistant coach Lee Briers and Tommy Leuluai in pre-season.

Smith, a three-time Academy Grand Final winner, made his first team debut for Wigan in 2019 and helped the Warriors clinch the League Leaders’ Shield in 2020.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Smith is an excellent talent and proved it last night. Wire's best attacking threat was Williams and when Smith was on shut him down completely.
OK one error, but for goodness sake get a grip! Field was MOM by fans but didn't he make two glaring errors?
Smith was not good last year but tell me someone who was? As well as playing in a poor side he did it with a busted shoulder that sent him into hospital within days of the season's end.
Give him a break!
Smith is staying at Wigan and hopefully for years to come.
Agreed and the only thing we should want from Smith after last night is for him to learn. In conditions like those and kicking close to the touch line, he needs to be drilling that along the floor, not chipping it up in the air but mistakes happen and it was a minor blot on a second good performance in two weeks. At least he did it well in to Wires half and not kicking from our 40m zone.
looks like Cust might be the man to teach him about game management, he was very good and composed the other day

Does game management get taught or do some players just have it? (Rugby brain, communication, leadership etc)
