Potentially but it doesn’t feel like he’s that highly thought of. They had the opportunity to put him in when Shorrocks got the 6 shirt but didn’t. I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Farrimond jump ahead of him next year, even though he’ll only be 18.nathan_rugby wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 1:42 pmIs Logan Astley not going to be ready to be backup in the halves next year? The fact Hampshire and Thornley haven’t featured much is simply down to luck and that’s great but you won’t always be that fortunate. I’d let Thornley go but keep Hampshire if possible. That way Eckersley and Douglas move closer to a game, especially when you factor in Cust going and French probably being a full time stand off.
In the forwards we’re looking strong-ish but we definitely need a second rower as things stand. You can’t go in to a season with just Farrell and Nsemba as specialist second rowers. Walters may well be playing there and I think we’ll see Chan there at times as well. I think we’ll see Powell go and in that case, we needed Leeming. You can’t run with 3 hookers, aged 21, 20 and 18, with about 30 Superleague games between them (all for one of them) going in to a full Superleague season.
Or does he need 1 more season on loan?

Re: Toby King
The only way Hampshire would’ve got in recently would’ve been to move French out of 6 and they clearly didn’t want to do that. When Field got injured, Hampshire was also injured but came in when he was back. Once Field was back, Hampshire then lost his place but I thought he did well in his appearances.Mike wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 6:09 pmI dunno - there have been times this season where it seemed obvious Hampshire should have been in the side, but the coaching staff just didn't want to put him in. Its no good having a backup that the coaches won't play even when there's a need. I think they did trust Thornley, we've just not needed him in the second half I think.NICKYKISS wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 3:07 pmI wasn’t levelling the 17 senior pros comment at anyone in particular mate, it’s just that I’ve seen comments of ‘what have Hampshire and Thornley brought’. They provide senior back up and you need a bit of that. If we did release Hampshire, Cust and Thornley, we’ll be one injury away from Douglas, Eckersley or Astley starting. If you then get 2 or 3 in the backs (and you could get more), you’re really struggling.Charriots Offiah wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 10:52 am
I fully understand your point Nicky. In my view we would have been better served keeping Powell and integrating our young hookers. I just don't see what Leeming brings and, given he has got a four year deal it means that we are going to see some exciting talent move on. I wasn't suggesting that we should run with 17 senior pros. I think Thornley, Cust and Hampshire are likely to go, for different reasons, and given we have only signed Keighran we will need to recruit. The forwards are well stacked but I agree we need to recruit another experienced forward, and I think we will if Isa leaves.
I’m not really against you on the Powell comment. I think we’ll lose an experienced and well respected leader if and when he goes. I do think Leeming will provide a bit of that though and he’ll add more threat from the bench.
Having some experienced back up is a must IMO. Reasons not to keep players on can’t be ‘well they’ve not been needed this year’. At times under Lammy we had 8-10 players missing. Say we lose Field, Marshall, Keighran and Harry Smith next year and no longer have Hampshire, Thornley and Cust, you’re 1-7 is going to look something like- French, Miski, Eckersley, Wardle, Douglas, Shorrocks and Astley. We can’t be left in that sort of position. If we release Thornley, Hampshire and Cust, we’d need to bring somebody else in. One player still not announced as being signed anywhere next year is Deon Cross at Salford. I could live with those 3 going and him coming in to provide cover but we’re playing with fire if it’s all exits and eating solely on kids to cover. I don’t think we’ll do that.
Re: Toby King
Looks some talent. Very early days and they’ll need to be cautious with him but you’d be surprised if he doesn’t make it.pedro wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 8:10 pmlove Jack, watched him for years, lives and breathes rugbyNICKYKISS wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 8:09 pmPotentially but it doesn’t feel like he’s that highly thought of. I fully agree, we do need experienced players in case of injury. Getting the balance right is very difficult. I wouldn't be against Hampshire going round again although I think the lad has too much talent to be playing in the reserves. I am still hoping King stays or we sign another centre though. I think the three young lads you name could do with going out on loan again next season and playing the odd game in the first team.NICKYKISS wrote: ↑Mon Sep 04, 2023 3:07 pmI wasn’t levelling the 17 senior pros comment at anyone in particular mate, it’s just that I’ve seen comments of ‘what have Hampshire and Thornley brought’. The rumour is that Morgan Harper the Manly centre will sign for Wire, it could be that King is staying with Wigan after all.
