At the risk of exercising the troll police, can I ask if resurrecting an old - but interesting - thread is against the site rules?
My reason for adding to it is to point out that Brother Bilko seems to have omitted Lew Bradley from his list, who according to my sums should be in 3rd place on the all time list with 110.5%. Lew took over from Jimmy Leytham and beats him by 8%, so deserves a mention at least.
Actually the debate shows it is not really possible to compare players from different eras.
For what it's worth though I think Offiah was a far better winger than Robinson. Jason was dangerous from short range - he was converted from a scrum half after all - but I can't recall him scoring from inside his own half like Offiah did on numerous occasions. And there was more to Offiah than just speed. He caused havoc by appearing in centre field, and had many try assists to his credit.
P.S. If anybody is worried about my low frequency of posting, it's because I only get time to do this when my wife is away visiting her relatives! So I'll most likely disappear again soon...
In addition to the obvious choice of Boston, many others like
the following:-
Latham, Miller, Ring, Ellerby, Hilton, Nordgren, Sullivan, Lake, Wright, Jones, Vigo, Robinson, Offiah, Dallas, Richards being just a sample of the many over the years.
I suspect far more tries per game in Offiah's era than Billy's. I wonder what Dave Myer's strike rate was with Gene Miles inside him?
Secondly, Billy did have strength as he got older, and probably lost pace, but he still had an elusive swerve of the hips. The only other player I've seen with this was Billy's grandson, Wes Davies. Unfortunately he didn't inherit Billy's other attributes.
I've seen Nordgren, Jolly, Ratcliffe, Hilton, Bevan, Sully, Carlton, Lake, Francis, O'Loughlin, Vigo, Wright and umpteen others but Billy is the man for me.
