Excuse me for being dense here, but I read HC's comments about Marsh and L Tomkins as sarcasm, saying that if we are going to write off Gelling as only being a Toyota cup player then in that case get rid of Marsh and Tomkins as they are only playing at "lower" levels and haven't proved themselves at the top yet.

And seen cheap signings who were great servants to Wigan, McCormack, McGinty, Carmont, Cowie, The Iro brothers. Some players play for one team and dont cut it, or are constantly injured...Nigel Wright, great player...for Wakefield, didnt do much for us, loaned to Wakefield...great player, again didnt do much for us!! Lets give Gelling a chance, just like Dudson, and Flower, lets support them until its PROVEN they are not Wigan standard....they just may prove some people wrong!!!

I thought Ainscough was good when he was moved back to the wing from centre, he was not given enough time. look how Richards was when we played him at centre and how well he turned out.
Unfortunately there are a few inaccuracies here

Reber was not high profile ANYWHERE whereas McCormack was always very high rated, played Origin and much more expensive that Reber.

Likewise, we had to fight to get Kevin Iro andhe did not come cheap.

Many players are under valued by our fans. Both Bell (SL GF) and Ainscough (CC) played solid roles in wins during our barren years.

Nigel Wright was seriously unluck with injuries but had ability. If he had stayed fit then he may have made a huge difference in some lean years.

Fully concur with you view re lets give these players a chance. Imagine the response of some to Tony Iro today.

It's not just you, that's how I interpreted the comment as well. I can't comment on other posts by HC as I haven't read his comments about Trent. But, in this case, I think he was speaking with tongue in cheek and saying, at least give Gelling a chance before slating him.

I will reserve judgement until he's played at least a half dozen games for us.I well remember some of the sarcastic comments as regards B.Finch of whom some of those posters have been silenced. It will always take time for a player to bed himself into a new team.Time that I personally shall give him.Reading some of the comments about Gellings signing one would assume that S.Wane and IL know nothing about the standard of player they are bringing into the club.If from what we have seen from past signings by IL I for one do not think he's done a bad job on the recruitment front.I have always said that posters are entitled to their own point of view not that I always agree with every post. But the one thing that gets my goat more than anything is the negative comments about a player who's not even arrived at the club let alone pulled on a jersey. If after he's had the time to familiarise himself to the team and enough game time for us to comment on his abilities. Then so be it!But until that time arrives can we not be a little more positive about his signing? After all we have little or no facts to go on even his late clubs forums give little indication of how good or bad he is.Less of the negativity please. :D

Thanks you are correct. If he were a 28 year old Toyota player so be it but a lad breaking through with an unfortunate setback Let his playing prove his worth. Jim

No idea how Gelling will go for Wigan as I know nothing about him.

But when I or anyone else does know something about a player and bases their expectations on that, they ought not to get shot down in flames or accused of being negative if those expectations don't amount to much if the player in question has done nothing at his previous club. The idea we should cast our judgement aside just because a player signs for us is daft. It cuts both ways anyway. I knew Finch was a good player so did not jump on any anti-Finch bandwagon when he was not so hot in his first few games. Class will usually come out in the end and it is rare it doesn't. It did in Finch's case as it did with Barrett who took even less time to get going.

Gelling is a young player and so we will have to see if he makes it and what the club makes of him.

So if my OPINION is differentto your OPINION i cannot post my OPINION because it conflicts with anyone's right to trash a player sight unseen.

Most people (Dave O / Jim you belong to that group) tend to get it wrong as many times as you get it right. The secret is never to ignore the hard evidence for example Trent B in your case Jim, if the players talk about how X player helped develop their careers, you take note. There is a saying form is temporary, class is permanent UNFORTUNATELY that is bullshit. Indeed, a classy player never loses that class BUT he loses the physical / athletic / even mental qualities to exhibit that class. So when a Dave O say I told you so, he forgets countless examples of players who had it but then lost it for various reason, Greg Florimo was an awesome player in his day, for Wigan? Tim Smith? Fantastic junior / rookie, for Wigan?

There is a saying banging your head against a brick wall. Perhaps that should be banging your head against a Dave O. Far better people read and heed an earlier post by Kooch. PLayers need quite a few games before anybody can say anything, young players may need a season or two.
