Well I'll be back in Wigan at the weekend for the Sharkies game.

May be one of my last trips as a 'visitor' :)

That is not new. I can remember my Mum & Dad complaining about that when I was growing up in Hindley Green in the 70's.

Used to go out a lot on Bolton. One of my best friends lived in Harwood and we'd meet up in the town centre and go to various pubs such as the Swan which had a Rock Club. Was shocked on a recent trip how it had changed. Wigan town centre is not that different to how I remember it.

Ey Dave, I never knew you lived in Hindley Green! I grew up there, age 5 to 15 (1956-1966). My first 5 years in Hindley, and moved to Yorkshire at 15.

Sounds like you were near to The Swan, I lived opposite Plumpton's garage - HG's only petrol station ("An airline, we haven't even got a bus station!" Dave Spikey).

I agree with posters on here that I prefer to remember Hindley/Hindley Green/Wigan as they were. I miss the dialect tho - I love to read Room on the Broom to my grandkids in a Hindley accent.

Btw, the Liverpool accent came to Hindley Green in the late 50s when they built the Beaumaris/Richmond/Pendennis estate behind the house I lived in.

We played football on a field near "the White House", an old pit railway engine shed. It was always US versus the scousers, even if it was 12 v 6. I developed a lifelong prejudice against scousers, even though I'm generally anti-racist etc. I have met an odd decent Scouser, but find my hatred is generally the right approach (Apologies to any Wigan fans who were unfortunate enough to be born in Liverpool.)
