That's an interesting point. How is the club planning to enforce this, will they have their stewards walking up and down the stairs all through the match looking out for smokers? Will they climb over other spectators to get to the middle of a row to ask someone to stop smoking if they light up? Will they be using the cameras mounted on all the stands to spy on people and watch out for smokers trying to be discrete? If you as a spectator ask someone to stop smoking and they say no, what should you do? You'll have angered the smoker for challenging them, and probably will anger all the people around you if you get up to go and find a steward to complain to.
I've not seen any notices at all about how this is going to be enforced. Next Friday could be interesting...

Theres supposed to be cameras around the stadium aren't there, maybe these could be used. I personally don't think there will be that much of a problem, generally rugby fans stick to the rules except for the one about it being family game and therefore no swearing! Might be the odd young kid trying it on but they'll be chucked out, as for older fans they should know how to abide by the rules and if they're not willing to then the same should happen to them.

If you need any help on this subject...
I was the one who started the ball rolling for a smoking ban at Warrington.
A good way for you to get things noticed is to firstly pin a topic on your website (and also on the Latics) and invite all your contributers to bombard the chairmans,media office and anybody elses email address you can get hold of with no smoking requests...
I did this at Warrington and it was brought to the attention of the board at the next meeting.
It all didn't happen over night however, it followed after a series of meetings and even more pressure from the fans in emails that they decided to have a ballot.
Under the present environment, I would be surprised if you went to a ballot.
It's only a matter of time before a blanket ban comes into force, and you can also use this as an argument in your emails, also tell them of the media exposure that comes free with such a bold and pionering move, and any other bullys**t you can come up with.

We've found at Warrington that it's self policing. There were only a couple of reports of people smoking but they soon extinguist after a reminder from fans and officials.
They'll always be the odd poor desperado grabbing a quick gasp it in toilet traps but I think most of us could overlook that.

ON THE SMOKING THING YES THEIR SHOULD BE A SMOKING BAN IN THE STANDS. BUT AREAS IN THE WALK WAYS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO BE MADE SMOKING AREAS. I DONT SMOKE BUT SEVERAL OF MY MATES DO SO SURELY A COMPRIMISE SHOULD BE ADOPTED FIRST INSTEAD OF A TOTAL BAN :conf:

That's unenforcable, and if anything it makes more sense to smoke outside than inside! I don't want to have to walk through a smoke-filled indoor space to go back into the open air, I've already been covered in smoke in the few minutes it takes to walk through the concourse. The only way would be to have a separate, sealed off area for the smokers to go to but then they wouldn't be able to be with their friends unless their friends were also prepared to go into the smoking zone. There's no point saying half this open air is smoking, the other half is no smoking, as the smoke doesn't recognise such boundaries (it always used to amuse me back in the 80's when driving into Manchester to see signs proclaiming it as a "Nuclear free city" - if anyone had dropped a nuclear bomb in the area would the radiation know it wasn't allowed into Manchester?!).
Our local Cafe Nero has the same problem, the smoking area is by the entrance so you've got to go through the smoke to get to the counter area with it's "no smoking" signs. Totally ridiculous.

Ok! That's a suggestion. But the discussion with me wont help your cause.
Somebody has to pin a topic although this thread could do, research the email address of the media office and your chairman and his side-kicks and show them.
It's what we did at Warrington and we filled the inboxes with our thoughts.
