Dave you need o read things in context. I qualified that statement re Danny.
I just saw a simple statements sayng he was not a good defender without qualifiation.
However, no matter what you say or what I think, Danny very often has to use the momentum of the runner to bring him down 1 v 1. He does so brilliantly. Nevertheless, passive tackling is frowned upon professionally. Sorry but it is.
So how is he supposed to tackle then? He isn't big enough to tackle 1 v 1 in the way described i nthe thread. As you say he uses players momentum brilliantly so I doubt if Noble is frowning on Orr's contribution in defence or trying to coach him to tackle a different way.
Being small he does v certain players get underneath them and in the midriff very well.

Personally, I think players should tackle according to their stature. However, professionally, the experts seem to differ and view everybody as the same and fear offloads like the plague. For example, Danny would struggle versus Ali Lauittiti or Sonny Bill etc to stop hem offloading.
If experts view everyone as the same they aren't very good experts IMO. You will never get players the size of Orr and Brown to tackle properly 1 v 1 in the way you have been describing.

That being the case they ought to tackle, as you say, based on their stature. If that means they are in a position of facing the likes of SBW they just have to try and use their technique to tackle them. If that means they can't stop them off loading then you have to ask where is the support. (One high, one low).
Again personally. I would take Danny Orrs tackling technique over what players are being coached. I am sick of seeing Thomas Coyle bounced off because he hits high as instructed. I even think young players should be taught techniques like the cumberland throw if they are small.
Contorversial that one! Hasn't it neen banned? Can't remember but it is always a controversial tackle.
I have stated what I think the best tackle technique is and I believe men of Gillmeisters stature are always the best tacklers. However, the professionals in SL seem to differ and my opinion is just that.
My opinion is that if you want to do 1 v 1 tackles high up, ball 'n all you have to be a big strong player and spot on with your technique.

Its different when there are two men in the tackle as the one going high isn't facing the entire strength and momentum of the attacker. But 1 v 1 its a big ask to get right and make work.

Don't be confused by quantity rather thyan quality! A more accurate test would be to look at tackles made against penalties conceded of each player!
Isn't that looking at quantity too?

For completeness you would need tackles made against missed tackles & penalties conceeded and also proportion of total tackles for his side in the match.

If you're talking current Wigan...Danny Orr. The guy tackles above his weight and sometimes you have cringe at some of the guys he picks to tackle.

But from watching DVDs and various matches in the past...Trevor Gilmeister. If anybody else has seen the 25 Years of Origin DVD, the tackles he makes on Paul Harrogan would probably cut a lot of players in half. :D

The NRL charged Hindmarsh for a grade one dangerous throw last week

It happened in the 76th-minute tackle during the Eels' 46-12 win over Newcastle on the 8th of July 2006.

Hindmarsh entered an early guilty plea on the 11th of July and was suspended from one game[/quote]

Much criticism was given to Danny Orr a few months ago as he brought little to the attack and his whole game was based on what he brought in defence. Since Moran has gone this has changed somewhat and he is offering far more in attack. As a result his defensive efforts are a big plus for a player in his position.
When he was being critised for his poor attack it was being put forward on here that he tackled too much and this was to the detriment of his attacking play.

As he seems to have found his attacking form it would be interesting to know how many tackles per match he is doing now compared to earlier in the season.

If it is about the same, what would that say about the number of tackles a stand off should be making?
