Fwiw I think Bateman’s reaction says it all. Terrible technique.
That said, if the ref sent Marshall’s try up as a try on-field I bet it would have been given.

Can someone explain why the penalty for Wigan when Smithies got his 'facial' wasn't intentional direct contact with the head???

Because there wouldn’t be enough to overturn it.
Never said it was wrong. It was the right call. Just saying how silly the rule is. Helps take the edge off the shocking display.
