I do have some sympathy with the Miski one. I think even in the Aussie system that would've been a bit of a wait because you'd expect the ref to give it and the checks in the background would still take a while. In general though, we would save so much time and frustration by the refs just giving trys on the field and letting them be checked in the background. It uses the natural wasted time of players celebrating and getting in to position for a restart and 90% of the time, the trys are just confirmed without any further hold up.outback wiganer wrote: ↑Mon Apr 28, 2025 5:50 amI agree. The Aussies have got it spot on. The Miski try took forever to come up with a decision. Thaler decided he hadn't gone into touch 2 or 3 times, but kept on looking at it again and again. So frustrating for everyone concerned.NICKYKISS wrote: ↑Sun Apr 27, 2025 9:36 pm They should just go to the Aussie system IMO. Ref gives a try, the players get in to their positions and the goal kicker starts to line up his shot, all why the VR is silently looking at replays in the background. He confirms the try and we crack on or if he finds major doubt, it's looked at in a bit more depth and usually turned over. It's so much more streamlined and a far better experience for the viewers.

re Video ref. the game yesterday was an example of getting the decisions right, but equally it can take far too long
for the Field try, he looked and said that the Hull player had instigated contact on the dummy runner, and ball taken outside of the tackle (on his 1st look), and they replayed it about another 5 times. It was clear as day it was a good try, so why keep looking at it. It was given as a try on the pitch, so no need to over analyse it. But, this is a bit of a bug bear of mine at the minute that the defender can make a bad read, touch the dummy runner, and easily get a penalty / try chalked off
on the Miski try, again, he looked and could see Miski hadnt gone into touch (and i get he is over turning the refs decision), but he then took the best part of 5 minutes keep looking at it from different angles. I know we all want the correct decision to be made, but equally, i think the time to make some decisions are going to put neutrals off watching the game. As fans we dont like it, but accept it, so i would think neutrals are thinking this is ridiculous

I don't see why, as fans, we should accept the ineptitude of the video ref taking ages and looking at the same images, over and over again, before finally coming up with the decision they made on first viewing.the pieman wrote: ↑Mon Apr 28, 2025 8:51 am re Video ref. the game yesterday was an example of getting the decisions right, but equally it can take far too long

So other than the video ref and commentators anyone got an opinion on the actual performance

Re: Wigan squad for Hull FC (SLR9)
I think this is partly the point. The game is being overshadowed by the refs and their decisions. The Miski try was a little miracle in its own way but no one is talking about it. The entire sport is talking about how long it took to give it. It's doing the game no favours.
I thought we played some good stuff and we're strong in defense but we're guilty of forcing the issue at times. A little more patience in attack and we'd have put the cleaners through them. Good to see Bev involved more (than recent weeks) and the returnees getting minutes. As others have intimated, Sam Walters is fast becoming the backbone of the team. Having him, Thompson and Harvard in harness together should be a frightening thought for other teams!
Not vintage Wigan but more than enough to get the job done comfortably.
Re: Wigan squad for Hull FC (SLR9)
I thought both sides were well off their best but that's to be expected after the emotion of the Good Friday games, especially when we'd played HKR the week before as well. The game highlights how we can win games when not at our best because you're always going to score points on a dry track with guys like Field, French, Wardle and Nsemba in your side.
The player I'd probably pick out over the last few weeks for most praise would be Miski. He is playing on one leg but you wouldn't know it and the work he is doing carting the call away from our line is invaluable. I think he's really highlighted in these last few weeks that you don't know what you have until it's gone and we really missed those carries in the weeks after Vegas.

There were a number of times where Miski just kept pushing through and breaking tackles, made some very strong carries - very good yesterday.
I must admit I was looking forward to seeing Douglas get more game time at the expense of Miski this season, but have changed my opinion now.

The Miski try was not straightforward, but what bugged me about it was that Ben Thaler seemed to have convinced himself it was a try quite early in the piece, but then repeatedly looked at the same angles over and over again before eventually spitting it out.

Can I make a serious point, with no intention to argue with anyone?
This is a long thread, and not the first one, which is primarily about refs and their decisions. The aim of clubs and the RFL is to "engage" with fans. (The IMG even includes online or social media engagement as one of its criteria.)
Therefore the people arguing against too many replays and overuse of the video ref are inadvertently helping to persuade the powers that be to keep doing what they do, or even give us more.
Just a thought!
