Given the Wire duo have already been told by the club and the club has told the world they are to be released, what purpose does the 1st Sept deadline serve for them?

They are surplus to requirements so that should allow them to speak to other clubs already. I know they probably have been as it seems a open secret many players have also done this but it just seems a bit daft sticking to this rule in these circumstances.
