no we wouldn't plain and simple. at centre he stunk. on the wing he was great, at full back he was awesome. either of the later will do.

if we sign a centre, which we need to. when goulding comes on, bailey to second row, coley to prop, and it can work that way. no need for full back, richards wants to stay there. and if we do get one, put richards back on the wing!

Why though?

You have to ask yourself with the current situation at the club i.e needing a fullback centre and a prop and only having 140K to spend , this would be the best option.

Ok we might not see the best of Pat at centre ( or we might who knows) but as a team we definately would.
He was crap and everybody was saying what a waste of money. FB or wing nothing else :conf:

I know what you are saying Alex. And to be fair on paper it reads as good commonsense. It balances the team and does it all within the amount we have to spend.

The trouble is, lets be honest...
Pat was awful at center. I know there are mitigating circumstances but put him back there and I do not see prospects of it being any better. He just is not a center. He knows it and the fans know it so will be on his case from the off. If he has even an niggling doubt his confidence would hit rock bottom with the first volley of "i told you so" from the terraces.

He is solid at FB. That was what we were needing at the time so I am not being critical. There is a lot to be said for that quality even if it would be nice if he broke the odd tackle coming away from the line. Rads only rarely beat the first man yet was so solid who cared?

On the wing if you take away his attacking the high cross field kick he is not the kind of winger who defenses are scarred by. That just is not his game is it? He seems to be a very "Australian" type of solid /few mistakes player - thats not a crtisism!

For mine I would leave him at Fullback.
A nice solid dependable base to build from. Moving him back to center just seems to be a gamble. who knows you could be right but i don't want to gamble and you be wrong.

And by the way...

Goulding is ready.

I dont know, but did Pat ever play centre for Wests, I thought he was just an out and out winger there. Pat's confidence, to me, has been one of the major factors in his big improvement from two seasons ago. I dont think we have seen enough of his ball handling skills to decide if he could play centre. He is big enough, tackling improved big style, but doesnt seem to run like a centre. Swerving, side stepping etc.
Any other thoughts on this ?

Spot on, he's not a centre. THink the blokes probably had enough of changing positions to be honest.

As PM said - "but doesnt seem to run like a centre. Swerving, side stepping" I think he's got it right. I don't really see the need to change RIchard's position at all - we'd get a new FB and effectly create a period where 2 players rather than just the one are adjusting to settle in to the team. Wigan fans have been wanting a bit of stability, and we suddenly get some (although not in ideal circumstances with cap/squad size etc) , and everyone starts suggesting we move players around just as they are becoming settled and used to playing a certain position. Barmy!

i know what you're saying alex, but the possibility he wasn't at all comfortable at centre also lead to the loss in confidence. you don't just go from world ebater at wests, winning the nrl grand final to being poor. if this was the case with the team being poor then he'd have shone above the rest and he didn't. he wasn't comfortable at centre, and it shows when he was so delighted when noble came and moved him onto the wing. says it all really.

leave him at FB, get a centre in, ease goulding in, coming on as a replacement for bailey for when he moves into the pack. this then allows coley to move to prop (prop problem solved) and bailey hock hansen battle for second row positions. and we'd also have a great strike centre alongside either colbon or calders.

problem solved. close the topic. blame turf.
