JASON Ryles has today signed a three-year deal worth $1.7 million with UK Super League outfit Les Catalans.
The powerful prop is currently in his first year of a three-season contract with St George Illawarra, but was given permission to negotiate overseas several months ago.

He will head to France next season, leaving the door open for the Dragons to sign Melbourne second rower Jeremy Smith.

Oh why did you have to post that, Josie? CPWigan is going to be as happy as a box of frogs now. This may just push him over the edge :)

Les cats can certainly make their cap money go a long way - do you think that the RFL have been advising them on loop-holes?

Sutty :eusa3:

Statistically the best prop in the NRL.

Ryles or Fielden, Ryles or Fielden mmmmmm

I bet IL talked to Ryles on his Aus holiday :eusa15:

It's hard being a Wigan RLFC fan in 2008 :sigh:

Especially as most are pushing for the retention of Eamon O'Carroll at the club too - how many props should Wigan have?

I did read that Gasnier and Ryles tookup 1/4 of the overall Cap space of the Dragons :o (from Johnny Raper interview apparently). So he would not have come cheap!

Found the article!

And his rumoured contract at Les Cats.

More's the point. If Potter is joining stains as head coach next season, why did he not sign him for his new employers? Instead, the stains are being linked with the "Dogs" Armit!!

and how do they manage with the value of the Euro high against the pound. I know my pound buys about 15% less this year so should their cap be worth less ?

Using the media's speculated wage for Ryles of 1.7 million dollars.

This is 1,039,806 euros over three years (let you divide by three  ) at today's rates

In sterling £820,839 over three years (ditto the yearly rate  )
at today's rates

I would assume that the salary cap takes into account the difference in exchange rates between the French and British sides :doz: :doz: :doz: to "level" out the difference in actually "paid" currency :doz: :doz: :doz:

Answers to that question on a postage stamp!

That's a big assumption!

One thing is for sure the Euro being stronger than the pound v the Aussie dollar makes it easy for them to outbid us on wages when the player sees how many Aussie dollars his wages will buy.

The simple solution is to make Les Cats pay all their players in pounds so its transparent how much they are paying the players and transparent if they are over the cap or not.

As the cap is "live" if they pay in Euro there's an accountant at the RFL with a headache.
