A few things to do/check if you laptop is over-heating (some of these if not all of these points have probably been made but what the hell.)

- If in warranty get it repaired

- Take it to a PC Repair shop (PC World) they probably will rip you off and charge you a ridicules price but your laptop would be fixed and should have a guarantee for at least a year.

If not:

- Make note of when the laptop gets hot or the fan start to work in overdrive, is it all the time of specific applications.

- Do a virus check on your computer, Vista has an inbuilt virus check called Windows Defender but you can also buy another one like Norton or download Grisoft AVG for free.

- Defacement the hard-drive (helps the computer run more efficiently) the tool can be found in Start Menu-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter.

- When the laptop is switched off use one of the long extensions from a vacuum cleaner and place it over the vent (usually at the back of the laptop). Its probably not recommended but it is one of the easiest ways to clean any dust out the vents.

medlocke wrote:Nothing to do with Gemma's problem, but seeing as you are being so helpful Geoff, how easy is it to upgrade the memory in a lap top, the one i got free last year only has 512mb and runs slower than Wellens chasing Danny Ward  , from the looks of things memory is cheap at the moment, also is all lap top memory standard or do different manufacturers use different formats ie DDR, DDR2, etc
If your using the Vista OS an easier and cheaper way to increase RAM is to use Flash memory pen/stick and ReadyBoost.

I use a programme called tune up utilities it clears out all the crap on your comp and speeds up everything from start up to opening programs. Its well worth getting highly recommended and it will reduce your memory usage:
