Leigh Centurions have launched a stinging attack on the Rugby Football League's decision to award a Super League place to the Celtic Crusaders.

The snubbed Lancashire club insist they have no issue with the Welsh club, but that the RFL's decision to award them a license is "purely a geographical one".

"The decision makers should hang their heads in shame," said chief executive Allan Rowley.

RFL chief Richard Lewis insists the 14 clubs awarded licences "must deliver".

But Leigh chief executive Rowley is adamant that the Crusaders do not merit a place in the newly-expanded Super League after being "devastated" to be denied a place themselves.

"We now have a team that fielded 10 overseas players against us, because they are classed as a development team, and are now in our elite competition which is a complete contradiction of terms and we feel this decision is purely a geographical one," he said.

"We know that there is no system for appealing but we are definitely going to ask the RFL how Celtic ticked more boxes than us we owe that to the public of Leigh."

TBH, Widnes fans at work are bitterly upset. Saying the same thing, that Celtic got the franchise on purely geographical reasons. Ground not upto scratch, poor support and financially unproven as far as investment. I hope they do not become the "mill-stone" around the rugby league neck!

RL is the laughing stock of sport once again.

We have "elite"clubs with stadia like St. Helens, Bradford, Salford, Wakey, Cas and now Celtic while ignoring stadia the likes of Leigh, Widnes, Doncaster and even Halifax.

Now up to 50% of games will be played in dilapadated grounds not fit for purpose of modern sporting venues.

I don't think clubs should be in Super League purely on how "nice" their ground looks.

You can let a club into the SL just becuase its got a nice ground. But if its no good on the field, do they deserve a franchise? The RL would look really silly if they let the likes of Doncaster or Leigh into the league and they never won a game all season. A nice ground was only one of the criteria, there were other factors that were taken into consideration. Do feel sorry for Widnes though.

It was good enough for Huddersfield for years!

However the "nice ground " as you put it should warrent more emphasis than the other criteria for it is this that generates all revenues. Increased crowds through women and families, increase in merchandising and catering franchises through said crowds and players want to go there!

There is also the added value of how SL is perceived, when TV audiences and crowd word of mouth see/talk about the dilapidated facilitities that the public have to put up with. No family/women facilities, lack of amenities to have something to eat or drink open sewers for the main mens toilets and nowhere for a number 2

TWO EYED WARRIOR wrote:Leigh , with respect have had dwindling crowds and have not fought one bit to get there town teams back at junior level to ensure they have that production line set up.

Leighs attitude when last in SL was a disgrace and they completely ignored the youth and junior set ups and the money they got for this was spent elsewhere bringing in over the hill imports, you could argue they did this hoping to survive but the ignored the youth development big time !

Sorry but leigh would be better spending the time and money they are using to fight the RFL planning for the next licence application in 3yrs time instead of trying to run before they can walk

Pretty stadium they may have but small crowds rattling around in it wont help there cause at this point in time
like every NL1 club before them due to the RFL only giving the green light to promoted teams about 3 months before the season started so you have to scrape the barrel to get players. Where did Catalan finish in their forst season and how many junior players did they have. Let a team have 3 years to build and you end up- with a finished product.

Bit unfair to say that about Leigh as they are a rugby town unlike a lot of places.

You know if we played Leigh they would bring 5000, unlike the 50 Huddersfield brought last night. How many seasons did they finish bottom and because they had a state of the art ground didnt go down?

Its a joke and a slap in the face for both Leigh and Widness. Can wiat to see the minibus turn up next year with the celtic fans on.

I agree.

Yet there were no viable alternatives to Huddersfield (ground-wise) then, as opposed to now.
