Roberts problem?

Post by THE 18th Man »

its not a confirmed signing but its close to being done so does anyone think Amos Roberts signing for 4 years is a good idea. why so long? If he gets home sick and relesed then we have to look for a new winger and it upsets plans. i know i maybe going to far in the future but after the past 2 years its a huge possibilty. 4 years is along time to be on the other side of the world for.

I guess every signing is a risk.

As an example, Nigel Wright could have been a great Wigan player but for injury.

Canberra planned to build a team around Todd Carney. They adapted and overcame.

He is moving here like 1000's of other ozzies. No reason he cannot see out the contract. Good signing. Family man. No known vices fore a change Lets make him welcome not look for skelitons in the cupboard. Jim

By and large aboriginee players have done well in the UK. I can only remember Tricky Trindall at Saints failing.

i never said he would be rubish just that signing him on a 4 year contract might be risky considering most of the players have two year contracts and the coach only has a til the end of next season contract. so no im not looking for skeletens just stating a fact

Could it be that the contract will be slightly less per year because it is 4 years long?

For example; he could have had £75000 for 3 years; instead we have offered £65000 for 4 - this would mean a guaranteed income for 4 years and more security - as Roberts is unlikely to get another big contract after this one. It also means a lower yearly expenditure for the club and more space on the salary cap

Interviewer: So that obviously means that you're not going to St Helens and you're not going to Leeds?

Frano: I don't know why I would ever want to go to St Helens or Leeds

Roberts has not yet pulled on a jersey yet he is the subject of concern - should IL have offered him a two year or four year contract? Is he faster than Calders? Will he score more tries than Calders? Will he see out his contract or return home early to Aus? Will he cost too much? Is he coming for a holiday?

IL and JL have got to make decisions based on a number of factors the most important ones being - will he improve the team? Can we afford him within the structure of the salary cap? Are we paying an appropriate salary for someone of his standing and will the cost impact on our recruitment plans?

My view is: he will definitely improve the team, he has a proven track record at the highest level; he will be much cheaper than Calders who was one of our highest paid players; he will definitely fit under the salary cap, otherwise the RFL would not allow us to sign him and; if, as some have suggested, our recruitment continues we will know his services have been acquired at a reasonable price.

Let's give Ian and Joe some credit, they adopted a tight budget with a small number of players (alledgedly six) eating up 50% of the salary budget. They have continued to improve the team on a shoestring budget. They have: aquired the services of good NRL players - Riddel, Carmont, Smith, Roberts (hopefully); Signed proven English players such as Pryce and Mathers; Retained our first team homegrown players; Extended the contracts of opthers e.g. Richards and; Tied our good juniors down with longer term deals. Not bad for two guys who have been in the job for less than 12 months! Just have some faith in their judgement, the club is heading in the right direction.
