RFL appoints union referees

Post by MrDave »

RFL snaps up 3 union referees

With high profile referee Ashley Klein returning to Australia earlier this year the rugby football league has found its self with a lack of match officials to cover the expanded super league. As a result the RFL has decided to seek referees from rugby union to ease the work load on the eight current full time referees. As of next Monday Dan Glyne, Joe King and Rick O'Shea will begin their training to become full time rugby league referees. It is expected that all three referees could take charge of their first games as early as the 11 April as they each will be given a trial in the national championship provided they can learn the new set of rules quickly and all pass medicals later this week.

The move is not without its controversies, Dan Glyen was suspended by the RFU in late in 2008 and since then his refereeing career has been up in the air. Dan admitted it might take him a while to get into the swing of things in the 13 a-side form of the game but he is willing to work hard and will not get hung up on the his past with the RFU. London born Joe King has spent most of his career refereeing in the lower leagues of English Rugby Union but is serious about his switch to rugby league and believes rugby league will benefit from his no nonsense attitude to refereeing. The biggest shock was the decision by the young Irish referee Rick O'Shea to defect away from the Magners League to join up with European Super League. Rick is well known in the Magners League for his short fuse and fiery temperament when dealing with poor discipline on the pitch. Rick was impressed by the work the RFL and rugby league in general has done over the past few years and is looking forward to giving refereeing in the Super League his best shot.

I'll have to try better next year, the Ian Millward the movie has been the best RL related one I have seen so far.

Tried to get as many puns in about the names as possible Dan Glyne (Danglin') Joe King (Joking) and Rick O'Shea (ricochet).
