Would expect the difference due to the natural tendancy to go left and Gleeson being a right sided player. I don't like his attitude but accept his quality. If he plays with his wing we could see a vast improvement in distribution and results,

Just looked at the stats in comparison to Goulding - much better than darrell. :conf:

No argument there, my only complaint is Gleeson's age; he'll be 32/33 by the end of his contract, and not many centres (Senior apart) are still at their best at that age - even Connolly was going downhill by 30.

By contrast, Goulding is only 22, bit it seems as if his game time will be even more limited now. I wonder if he's seen as Carmont's successor, or if we'll lose him.

I think the thing with goulding now is taking over from Carmont when he retires/ leaves and so be used as a utility back for injuries and such like. He now has competition from Pryce, not a bad thing because this will motivate both.

I think goulding got his break because what other choices did we have at centres? We had richards who played there, withers who got injured and ended up retiring, bailey started as a centre for us so he got his break early. Not a bad thing because now he has bags of experience.

we shall see what happens over the coming rounds.

They are not much better when you take into account Goulding only played in 19 games in 2008 and Gleeson played in 26. Also lets not forget Gleeson was 28 and is an experienced international while Goulding was 20.

The averges highlighed in bold show which player has the better stats in each category, italics where they match each other.

Appearances 19
Tries 8 average 0.4 a game
Try assists 2 average 0.1 per game
Meters 1118 average 59 per game
Carries 160 average 8.4 per game
Tackles 218 average 11.5 per game
Offloads 8 average 0.4 per game
Attacking Kicks 4 average 0.2 per game
dummy half runs 58 average 3 per game
Tackle Busts 19 average 1 per game
Marker tackles 35 average 1.8 per game
Clean Breaks 13 average 0.7 per game
Kicks 5 average 0.3 per game
Missed tackles 22 average 1.2 per game
Errors 14 average 0.7 per game
Penalties 13 average 0.7 per game

Gleeson

Appearances 26
Tries 11 average 0.4 a game
Try assists 8 average 0.3 per game
Meters 2152 average 82 per game
Carries 342 average 13 per game
Tackles 444 average 17 per game
Offloads 53 average 2 per game
Attacking Kicks 3 average 0.1 per game
dummy half runs 21 average 0.8 per game
Tackle Busts 62 average 2.4 per game
Marker tackles 36 average 1.4 per game
Clean Breaks 18 average 0.7 per game
Kicks 3 average 0.1 per game
Missed tackles 30 average 1.2 per game
Errors 27 average 1 per game
Penalties 5 average 0.2 per game

Gleeson is better on most of the important statistics but Goulding matches his strike rate (trys per game), made more dummy half runs, was less error prone, missed the same average no of tackles, made more kicks in play, matched him for clean breaks and made more marker tackles per game.

I think for a 20 year old in 2008 in his first full season in the squad Goulding's stats stack up very well indeed when you are comparing them to arguably the best British centre in the game.

pieater-alex wrote:We now have two of the best centres in the league. It is quite frightening.

In fact I will go one further - name a better centre combination than Gleeson and Carmont?

With Ainscough and Roberts able to finish tries we have a very strong 3/4 line.

Shame we don't have that all important prop!
The best centre in SL is Gidley. As for a combination then Carmont and Gleeson will need some beating but they will find it difficult to operate behind a beaten pack. I can only disagree with one of your comments - we need two props not one!
