Barrow drew level on points with Whitehaven at the top of the Co-Operative Championship after beating them 18-12 at Craven Park this afternoon.

The Raiders followed up their impressive Challenge Cup performance against Wigan with three first-half tries against the league leaders - Jamie Butler, Lee Mossop and Andrew Brocklehurst crossing to put Dave Clark's side 18-6 up at the break.

Whitehaven rallied in the second period and mounted a comeback but it was not enough to prevent the hosts from taking victory.

Mossop fires on Barrow debut

Saturday, 11 April 2009

BIG forward Lee Mossop had a Barrow debut to remember as he scored a try in the 18-12 win over Whitehaven.

The victory at Craven Park — the first defeat Haven have suffered this season — puts Barrow level on points with their county rivals at the summit of the Championship ahead of Monday’s trip to third-from-top Leigh Centurions (1pm kick-off).

And Mossop, signed on loan from Wigan on Thursday having played for the Super League Warriors in the Challenge Cup tie against Barrow last week, was happy to have come out on the winning side.

“It felt great to be out there and it was a good win for the boys,” the 20-year-old said. “It was more of a scrappy win, but we have won and we can build on this going into Monday at Leigh.

“It was definitely more of a forwards’ game out there and our props have stood up to them and they have done a lot of hard work which has brought on the win.

“It’s always good to get a try as well, especially on your debut and it is a good feeling.”

As well as Mossop, fellow forwards Jamie Butler and Andy Brocklehurst scored the Barrow tries, with the game being played down the middle of the park for much of the 80 minutes rather than down the flanks where Barrow normally play.

“It was definitely different from the expansive game against Wigan last week,” Mossop said.

“It was all up the middle and tough stuff. The weather didn’t help much with the play. We knew that Whitehaven had a big set of forwards and we always knew they were going to come at us up the middle.”

Looking ahead to Monday’s game, Mossop added: “Leigh will be tough again. We know they are a class team, so we will have to be on our toes if we are going to get another win there.”
