Customs duty - Import VAT

Anybody got any idea on how it works, have just found a site in the states selling xxxl helmets at very good prices, and even with shipping costs i can get a decent one for around £110, just not sure how much i will be stung if i buy one, i bought 2 Carhartt winter coats from a shop in Wyoming xmas before last and got stung £45 when they where delivered
