Just watched the highlights of the 1985 CC Final..Wigan v Hull. What a refreshing sight to see tries fashioned from passing moves, instead of the now mandatory kick to the corner. We saw players on both sides with the class and ability to open up defences and score exciting open rugby.
How good to see wingers with the speed and skill to use the touchline, and score memorable tries. I feel our game has lost a lot of its flair and expertise, whether this is due to the Aussie influence, or the introduction of summer rugby, and the salary cap, I don`t know. But give me the style and skill as displayed in this epic match every time.
The crowds would flock back to see rugby played in the good old fashioned way.

The Henderson Gill try was fantastic, in slow motion you can see him clock the defender then head down the touchline and nothing else mattered to him.

Watched it last night and thought about the wingers. The first chicka try (when his footwork got him past the no 5) i thought to myself could ainscough score that and said yes. The second chicka try or the gill try i thought could amos have scored that and said no. :conf:

Thanks A`n`L what memories those tries brought back, and apart from 2 all were scored by sleight of hand and fleet of foot. Nowadays it appears that we have lost the art of drawing and passing, of dummy runs and scissor moves. At Wigan how many times do we see the team make good yardage up the field, then become bereft of ideas when we are in the 20 metre zone. The abilty to open a defence close to the line, other than by kick seems to have declined considerably.
The last time our team had a pair of halves who could perfect the art of unlocking defences close in was when Shaun and Andy were plying their trade.
I feel now that in Sam we have the start of a recovery to former glories, what we now need are the players to compliment his natural flair and ability.

Shaun Edwards was a strong anti 10 yard advocate. He may have been right. Personally I see great RL in all eras. The recent West Tigers v Parramatta game had as much great RL as the 85 Final.

I agree with him GP and if they halved the interchange too you would see far more RL.

Just watched Classy Tries. Thought the support was awesome. But yet I did see most of them live. How things have changed. Where has been the support in recent years??? That is what we have been missing!
