Kittwazzer its obviouse that for what ever reason Offiah was a player that you just didnt rate (we all have them). So know matter what is put before you to prove you wrong it wont change your opinion of him.Kittwazzer wrote:When he joined Wigan in Jan 1992, by my reckoning they had already won 4 successive Challenge Cups. How can you say he 'made the team successful'?DaveO wrote:
He was a contributor to that teams success i.e. he wasn't successful because of that team but he helped make that team successful.

Re: Martin Offiah
Shaun Edwards scored 10 for us didn't he but not for London. Did Wigan make Edwards? If you adopt your argument you can apply it to every player who shone in the great Wigan sides.Kittwazzer wrote:Actually DaveO, I would turn that comment around by saying that Wigan made Offiah more than Offiah made Wigan! He had never scored 10 tries in a match for Widnes and certainly never did it for London.
But isn't that were you came in, suggesting it was the team that made Offiah look good? My response was to your original point so we are going round in circles.
The point made by someone else about would Myers who he replaced have done as well says it all. There is no way Myers would have scored many of the tries Offiah did therefore the only conclusion is Offiah contributed to his own success as much as the team he was in did.
Why do you think Mo signed him in the first place? He was already an emphatic finisher at Widnes. He spent the majority of his career at Widnes and Wigan so when he finally left Wigan he did not do so in his prime, just like Edwards. He made a name for himself by joining the best of the best in the days when MoMo couldn't keep his hands off the chequebook!!
Had he not signed for Wigan, he would have eventually faded into obscurity alongside the likes of similar talents such as John Woods and Des Drummond!
Des Drummond was a great little winger and we have had others such as Gill and Ferguson and Offiah is easily up there with them and of course scored more for Wigan than the either of those Wigan players.
Well I don't think he enjoys much respect as an agent or pundit but as a player you are way off the mark as regards how he is viewed. He certainly would not be commanding anything like the respect he now aspires to enjoy as a pimp!!

1) Because he could. By this time, the man was power crazy!!DaveO wrote: Why do you think Mo signed him in the first place?
2) To ensure that a team which was already unbeatable, and had been for some years, moved to the next level which was not only to win, but to humiliate!
Personally, I always thought it was a penis thing with Mo. But, as an aside, how now ironic did it later become that the man whose borrowed cheque book came close to destroying Rugby League as a competitive sport, should eventually almost destroy his home town club with the Salary Cap he was instrumental in introducing!!
