A general question

Post by cpwigan »

Which do you think is more important? Defence or attack?

If a very good defensive team plays a very good attacking team which would you expect would come out on top most often?

Defence wins games and always will do.But if you can defend and attack its the winning combination. We are not a long way off being a very good team in both the above.

I don't think you can have one without the other. 60-40 split either way, any more than that and you won't be a good team.
The Saints sides of the 80s & early 90's were always great attacking sides but would come unstuck defensively.
Equally if your defense is amazing but you cannot clear your lines in attack you will be constantly under pressure and it will result in points against you.

I think as a basis of building a new team/club culture to play modern RL, as Madge is doing now, IMO you have to sort your defense out first and foremost.

On paper, albeit without much provenance, it happened when we played Wire!

Other than that, it is the old philosophical question about the irresistable force and the immovable object!

I think the way ahead is to have both the best attack and best defence, as we do right now...

Does the attack come from the defence though Geoff?

In our case, at present, very much so. Not only is our defence getting us pretty good field position, it's forcing errors from the opposition, giving us a great platform from which to attack.

exactly, Rovers in particular were being pinned back so they had to kick from deep in their own half meaning we were already past the half way line before the 1st tackle. This helped us massively in attack. Attack and defence are equally important.

Attack, is the best form of defence, plus you have the ball.
The attacking team has possession of the ball.
Attacking is less tiring than defending.
A high percentage of teams with most possession win games.
