A thought... 3 Peak Challenge - Mike Gregory

Been thinking for a while now that a group should do a fundraiser for the Mike Gregory Trust or other rugby-related charity. A group did Ben Nevis 2 years ago and although I was interested I couldn't get that weekend off so I missed out annoyingly.

Was thinking that instead of another Ben Nevis, why not do something tougher that most poeple would do once in a lifetime. The 3 Peak Challenge. For those who don't know you have to reach the summit's of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon - which are the highest peaks in scotland, england and wales (if anyone wants to donate £10,000 we can do the 5 peak challenge which is scotland, england, wales, isle of man, ireland)... in one day (24 hours)

There are plenty of ways to do it, an example taken from a website:

5pm Start Ben Nevis.
10pm Finish Ben Nevis and start drive to Scafell Pike (seven hour drive).
5am Arrive and start climbing Scafell Pike
10am Finish Scafell Pike and start drive to Snowdon (three hour drive).
1pm Arrive and start climbing Snowdon
5pm Finish Snowdon, and complete challenge

Another way would technically be camping on top of ben nevis, at midnight descend and go to scafell and reach wales for tea time. But this isn't quite the way to do it.

I know there are a few climbers on here who may be interested. The obvious dates would be bank holidays but Im unavailable for these (work patterns)... so a weekend in summer due to longer light hours and warmth. It'd be nice to have 2 cars, 2 or more fresh drivers etc...

If anyone would be up for it reply.

Just a thought

That's a cracking idea A&L. I'm definately for it and I know Stevethegas would be. I'm sure if we asked the right people onthis website andwithin the club, they could sponsor it and it would be great publicity for the website. Work and baby commitments aside, count me in!

It is a good idea doing the 3 Peaks, Ancient, it would be a sense of achievement, I don't want to knock it but you would have to be very fit, plus, all the other walkers similarly, see what "Trots", "Leyther Pie" or any of the others have to say regards the walk up Nevis that we did, (I didn't go on the Scafell walk because of holidays) 5 hours up and down Nevis is optomistic, similarly 4 hours up and down Snowdon(if you want to do it in 24 hours).
I reckon you would have to have some serious sponsorship to make it worthwhile for yourselves, overnight stays in Scotland and Wales, petrol costs, food stops, Bank Holidays wouldn't be good anyway because of other traffic.
As an aside, I think it is the turn of Snowdon for the annual trek up a big hill, plus you would get more volunteers I would think! As I say I am not knocking it but you would get more of a laugh if there were more doing it!
P.S. Did Three Peaks over 25 years ago, Billinge Hill, Ben Nevis and Ashurst Beacon with Orrell Silver Band and we needed the extra hour when the clock moved forward to do it in the 24 hours, and that was hard with the travelling :) See what others think, good luck

Mike we never did do Skafel Pike last year due to the weather and as you said, it would need some serious planing and sponsorship just to cover cost before you even got any sponsorship for the charity itself. Not knocking the idea as it is a gd one. As you said Snowden or Skafel would be an easyer option for others who are not seasoned hill walker to take part in.

Well I did scarfel pike years ago while still at school. You can be up and down that in 2 hours maximum. Not a climber but a walker yes. I presume Nevis and Snowdon can be reached just by walking to the top. Any way put me down for this one lads. Would love it. To do it in 24 hours would provide a sense of achievement and much needed money for the trust/charity.

The 3 peaks is not easy and nor should it be. Thats why it is popular and challenging. Obviously not all people who did the Ben Nevis climb would be fit enough to do it. Thyere would be a lot of planning needed but i truly believe people from all walks of life (young, old, male, female, disabilities) can do it or take part in it. You'd need to go at the slowest mans pace first and foremost thats a classic rule... the fitter people wouldn't get as tired and the slower people will be helped as a group.

The main problem apart from fitness is travel. If anyone has a minibus license this would be ideal. There are many options... minibus, 2 cars, drivers who wouldn't climb etc... whilst people rest or sleep on the journeys. I don't think accomodation would be needed from Snowdon as it's more or less North Wales and 2 hours drive at most.

Plenty of issues but i'm up for it. Also a single climb up Snowdon or Scafell Pike is equally appealing to raise funds.

A&L Nevis is at least a 6hr climb up and down in gd conditions which we had, but its only ever like that about 3 or 4 times a year we were very lucky. Traveling would be the big thing though and your right it would need a fair bit of planing. That why i think either snowdon or Scafel would be a gd one for this year and even plan for the 3 peaks as a challenge for nxt year

Thats fair enough, the last time I went up Nevis we did Fort William (0m above sea level) to the top in 5 hours with explorer scouts, it was sunny in FW about 23C but once past the pub at BN it clouded over and got really cold, this was a July. Difficult.

A year to plan seems a fair option I agree.

I guess nobody wants to cycle to Perpignan with me next year? :)

I would be up for it next year (was looking at doing it this year but not enough time to plan.) I am doing the Yorkshire big 3 (hopefully under 10 hours) for MNDA and St Catherines Hospice this year so i am hoping for sponsors closer to the time please.

I have chosen these 2 charities as my would of been father in law died of MN in october last year and the MNDA and St. Catherines really help him in his final months.

But as i say count me in for next year for the National big 3.
