The Crusher, the name given to a new kind of tackle in Australian Rugby League. The NRL decided to crack down on this kind of tackle in 2007 amid fears players would suffer serious injury when two or more players pressed down on their head and neck. The phrase "crusher" was coined by Seven sport producer Jon Underwood.
Only last week the NRL expanded its guidelines to outlaw The crusher, in which defenders use their upper body to put pressure on the head or neck of an opponent.

Widders became the first player to fall foul of the rule changes when he was charged by match review commissioner Greg McCallum.

Video footage of the Widders incident shows the Souths utility tackling Lyon before being joined by team-mates Michael Greenfield and Jeremy Smith.

With the weight of the three players combined, Lyon's head is pushed forward to the point his chin comes into contact with his chest.

In a sickening incident, Coote came from the field in the ninth minute and failed to return after having his neck pushed down to his chest by the weight of White.

The Panthers fullback played the ball but was then taken from the field with back spasms.

White was called out, penalised and placed on report by referee Jared Maxwell.

"You got him high and it was a crusher," Maxwell told White.

MELBOURNE prop Jeff Lima has escaped a charge after being reported for a "crusher'' tackle on Cronulla's Matt Wright in Saturday's NRL win over the Sharks. Lima wasn't charged by the NRL judiciary over the suspect tackle on Wright in the 30-10 win at Melbourne's Olympic Park.

I think it's come from the NRL and its when a players head is facing down and the defending player applies weight to their back so the tackled player's head is pushed into the ground and their neck is compressed. Very dangerous thing to do!

Generally IMO it is a by product of modern tackling techniques whereby when tackler 'wrestle' to lock the arms up particularly in as the ball carrier is brought to the ground a consequence is they come into contact with the ball carriers head and hence pressure the neck.

For a second I thought that the RFL had decided to stop Leon Pryce getting up to his favorite trick!

Interviewer: So that obviously means that you're not going to St Helens and you're not going to Leeds?

Frano: I don't know why I would ever want to go to St Helens or Leeds
