Cameron Phelps signs for Hull FC
Hull FC have completed the signing of versatile Australian star Cameron Phelps, subject to a Visa.
The Black and Whites have landed the talented 25-year-old on a deal until the end of the new campaign, which starts against Hull KR on Sunday at Magic Weekend.
Formerly of Canterbury Bulldogs and Super League champions Wigan Warriors, Phelps plies his trade at full back, but can also offer cover at centre or on the wing if required.
Down under he made 39 appearances for the Bulldogs scoring 12 tries, having come through the club’s junior grades as well as representing Australia at U19 level, before heading to England where he went on to score 11 tries in 41 appearances for the Warriors.
Speaking to www.hullfc.com, Phelps spoke of his delight at the opportunity to join Hull.
“I think Hull are a good club and they have a lot of potential. They have a good young roster, with a mix of youth and experience and have a chance of winning some silverware.
“You look at the likes of O’Meley and Fitz and then youngsters like Tom Briscoe and Danny Houghton, they have a good mix and a talented squad,” said Phelps, who is also a close friend of current FC star Mark O’Meley.
“I played with Mark before and he’ll be a big help for me settling in and I know Longy and Fitzgibbon as well, so it will help me get used to the plays and learn the moves.”
The arrival of Phelps gives Hull plenty of options for the new season and head coach Richard Agar is pleased to have landed a player of his quality.
“We are delighted to have secured the services of Cameron, particularly considering this time of the year, to get a player of his quality is good for us.
“In the first half of last season he was one of Wigan’s stand out performers and he received a strong recommendation from a former coach too, so we are delighted to bringing him in and that he sees Hull as the club he wants to be at.”
He added, “Cameron is a quality player and a quality professional, on and off the field, so he’ll bring a lot to the squad and to find a player of his calibre, at this stage in this season, gives us some tremendous options.”

In unrelated news, Jordan Tansey has been released from Hull. How wanted must Cameron feel?

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Desparate signing. Surely Hull have a talented youngster that would offer far more. If you return to Aus and nobody wants you that tells its own story.

From what I remember of the 2 reserves games against us, they have some good young forwards coming through but no-one other than Reece Lynn in the backs.cpwigan wrote:Desparate signing. Phelps is a massive improvement over Tansey, though.
Re: Cameron Phelps signs for Hull FC
The younger Briscoe? I would even ask to loan the young Hull KR fullback?
I think some posters on the RLfans thread are deluded. A player that Madge did not rate and let go, a player who nobody in the NRL wants YET some fans are talking him up as a world beater. Tad silly me thinks.

Re: Cameron Phelps signs for Hull FC
Hard to judge fairly on just two games, but he was outplayed by Josh Veivers in both. Decent prospect, perhaps, but a couple of years away from 1st team yet, I reckon.cpwigan wrote:The younger Briscoe?
Not that many go so far, I don't think, most are just saying he's an improvement on Tansey, which is true IMO (even without taking into account the off-field issues). He's probably not on a big salary, either, given that no-one else wants him.
