TWO internationals have progressed from Warrington Wolves’ scholarship to academy ranks after signing contracts.
Prop Will Milner and loose forward Zak Dewhirst were important members of the club’s under 16s team last season, leading to England Youth selection, and are now looking to make a similar impact with Warrington’s under 18s side.
Both boys hail from Halifax and played their amateur rugby for King Cross Park.
The players were tracked and recruited by the club’s Yorkshire scout Tommy Gleeson, who mentored them and brought them to training.
"To recruit two players of such high quality is fantastic for the club,” said Gleeson.
“These two junior international players have shown the right attitude, commitment and dedication to earn themselves not only a professional contract but a chance to continue their professional development at the club which, in my opinion, has the best junior development systems in the country at this moment in time."
Player performance manager Ben Lazenby added: “They both know and understand that the hard work starts now and they are both of the correct character and mind to continue with the hard work required.”

Warrington Wolves sign two more youngsters
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

And still they are bringing more young players from other clubs for their academy teams instead of producing their own

One of the criteria for an A rating in the licence application is development of young talent.
How on earth did Wire get an A rating? Do they even have an academy?

It's only what we have done with the likes of McIlorum , Hansen, Hampshire, Wright, Mahovic, Greenwood, Carberry, Acton etc
Go back to Jason and Luke Robinson. Teams need to scout and pick players up from wherever possible.

That may well be the case but surely an attempt to at least show that they are indeed capable of producing stock from within.Hardly likely from the evidence.Of course Wigan scouted for potential talent but we at least have an Academy.Any evidence to imply that Warrington will at some stage produce so called Academy players.Or will they only bring to the fore players who have been nurtured by other clubs that have an Academy. No straw damn us wrote:It's only what we have done with the likes of McIlorum , Hansen, Hampshire, Wright, Mahovic, Greenwood, Carberry, Acton etc

Warrington are one of only two teams to have beaten Wigan this year at U20 academy level. Their U18 team is probably better than ours. Rhys Evans is potentially one of the best young players in the game. Warrington provided four of the U18s players that beat Australia in December last year and three of the U16's that beat France earlier this year. They do seem to be getting their act together at academy level since bringing John Bastian from Leeds to head up their youth development teamKOOCH wrote:That may well be the case but surely an attempt to at least show that they are indeed capable of producing stock from within.Hardly likely from the evidence.Of course Wigan scouted for potential talent but we at least have an Academy.Any evidence to imply that Warrington will at some stage produce so called Academy players.Or will they only bring to the fore players who have been nurtured by other clubs that have an Academy. No straw damn us wrote:It's only what we have done with the likes of McIlorum , Hansen, Hampshire, Wright, Mahovic, Greenwood, Carberry, Acton etc

No Straw, I think the point is that their youngsters never get progressed to the first team. As soon as an expensive major talent comes available, they move in on him. Their treatment of Rhys Evans is a classic example. Its the equivalent of us sending Josh to Wakey for next season!
