Salfords City Reds' Phil Veivers in Leigh link

Post by josie andrews »

Salfords city reds assistant coach Phil Veivers is playing down reports linking him with Championship club Leigh.

Veivers claims he has not applied for the post of head coach at Leigh.

He told M.E.N Sport: “It’s news to me and I haven’t spoken to anyone at all from Leigh.

“I’m here waiting for the Salford coach Matt Parish to return from Australia and will then be ready to go for pre-season.”

Veivers is set to start the new campaign with the Reds working closely with Sean Long - his fellow assistant who is coming on board after announcing his retirement as a player.

Veivers, an Australian, has previously coached Swinton and has a good reputation in the game for his innovative methods and direct style.

He’s highly respected by the Salford players and did well when in temporary charge this term following the departure of Shaun McRae.

Veivers was considered to succeed McRae but club bosses opted for Matt Parish after meeting him in Australia.

Meanwhile, Bobbie Goulding, the French national coach, could be one man who would definitely be interested in taking charge of the Centurions.

The ex-Rochdale coach is keen on a return to club coaching after further enhancing his reputation at international level.

Goulding would relish daily involvement with players and could well be targeted as Leigh look to appoint Ian Millward's successor.

Millward is returning to Super League in 2012 to take charge of the Castleford Tigers - former Salford skipper Mal Alker has been linked as a possible target for Millward's backroom staff.

Alker revealed last week that he is ready to return to competitive action.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
