connecting home cinema

I have just bought a home cinema system and I am trying to work out how to get surround sound while watching normal tele, from what I have read I need to get a digital optical cord and connect it from the sky + HD box to the dvd player.
I am connecting dvd and tv via scart lead.
I also understand that full surround sound doesn't work on all channels. Is what I have said above correct or not. Thanks in advance.

Is it an all in one cinema system or separate AV amp ?

Sky HD to TV by HDMI for pic
Sky HD to Amp / All in one by optical for sound (only way to get Dolby from sky box as does not send through HDMI)

This you will get sound through the optical and pic through HDMI automatically if not select “TV” or “input” on the remote.

Best way to connect your DVD all in one to your TV is component cables if there is no HDMI, still the best IMO.

Got it sorted by having optical cable running from sky+ hd to dvd player. Thanks for your replies.
