Hitting the right notes for Christmas

Super League players from across all 14 clubs have been getting into the Christmas spirit in the build up to the festive period to help raise funds for the RFL Benevolent Fund by lending their skills to a video remake of the classic Christmas carol, The Twelve Days of Christmas.

Each club in the Super League have taken on the challenge of singing one verse of the carol and the video production will be available to watch on ukrugbyleague’s Youtube channel from 4.00pm on Monday.

With all proceeds generated from the video set to go to the Benevolent Fund, which provides support to individuals whose lives have been seriously affected through injury and illness, players across the country have been quick to test their soprano skills in front of the camera.

“I think it’s fantastic to help raise funds for the people who have played our great game and have been injured,” said Leeds Rhinos scrum-half Rob Burrow. “I think it’s a great cause and it’s great to give something back.

“As players, sometimes we don’t realise how fortunate we are. When we lose a game it feels bad, but it pales in comparison to what some people are going through and this sort of thing highlights the family orientation in Rugby League.

“The lads thoroughly enjoyed the singing and it was a pleasure to be involved. It’s not something we do often but it’s all good fun. We’re not the best singers but I don’t think we embarrassed ourselves - I don’t think there’s too many X Factor contestants in our team though.”

England and Huddersfield Giants prop Eorl Crabtree was keen to reiterate those comments, saying: “I think it’s important players get behind things like this and use our profiles to raise awareness of the Benevolent Fund.

“There are quite a few dreadful singers in the team, Kevin Brown and Luke Robinson are probably two of the worst singers you are ever going to come across but that’s what it’s all about - having a laugh and raising awareness, and seeing a Rugby League player doing something which is totally uncomfortable to them.”

For Wigan, the Warrior Girls stepped forward to fill the void as the players were in Florida on the pre-season training camp.
