Amos Roberts Forced to Retire - Official Announcement!!!

Wigan Warriors confirm that Winger Amos Roberts has regrettably been forced to retire from the game through injury.

Amos last played for the First Team against Leeds Rhinos in April 2011 and has been unable to recover fully from a compression knee injury. Roberts has been really unfortunate picking up a serious knee ligament injury back in 2010 in the Easter home game with Wakefield but recovered to return to the side last season before this problematic injury to his other knee.

Amos has managed to play this season for the Warriors in the Under 20's scoring a couple of tries but has found the injury to the knee joint re-occurring. After consultation with numerous Specialists and with the Club's Medical Staff, Amos has decided to make the very difficult decision to hang up his boots.

The 31-year old has made 55 appearances for the Warriors scoring 27 tries and 6 conversions following his move from the NRL at the end of the 2008 season.

On the news, Chairman Ian Lenagan said:

"This is really sad news for Amos and for the Club. The decision for any player to retire due to injury is a very difficult one to make. I would like to thank Amos for all his hard work and wish him and his family all the very best for the future."

Speaking about the tough decision, Amos told us:

"It is sad to end my career in such a way. Rugby League has been my life since I first started playing at six years old. It has taken me to many great places and I have met some wonderful people. I am happy with everything that I have achieved in my career and consider myself lucky to have played the game I love for so long. The players, staff and people of Wigan have been so good to me and I leave with such fantastic memories. I wish all my team mates all the very best and I know they will continue to achieve great things. I want to thank the amazing Wigan fans for the love and support that they have shown me, I will miss the town so much."

Warriors Head Coach Shaun Wane added:

"Mossy has been great for the club. He lit the competition up in 2010 when we won the Super League Trophy with his pace and power. For his career to end with injury is heart-breaking for him and his family. I am sure he will go on to be successful in whatever his next move will be in life. He has worn the famous cherry and white jersey with pride and can look back with great satisfaction at his Wigan career. We wish him all the very best for the future."

Warriors Rugby General Manager, Kris Radlinski also paid tribute to Amos following his loyal service to the Club:

"This career ending injury is a powerful reminder of how fragile a rugby players existence is. Amos was playing some of the most breath taking rugby I had ever seen and then he was cut down in his prime. I had a long conversation with Amos and I knew looking deep into his eyes that his time had come. I will always remember the tries he scored in 2010 and tell players that they can't take their careers for granted as it can be taken from them in an instant.

"I want to wish Amos, his wife Zoe and all his children the very best in life. You never leave Wigan, a part of the club will always be in Mossy's heart and our door will always be open for a player who gave us so much."

Why has it taken almost a month before this has "officially" been declared? A compensation package agreement??

I was really looking forward to Amos getting his form back, probably one of the most exciting to watch Rugby League players Wigan has ever employed.
Really sad to see his career end this way.
All the very best Amos, and thanks for the memories.

He definately was. In that spell he had at full back before his injury he was sublime in attack and was as good as any full back I have seen in a Wigan shirt.
