Leuluai extends Leeds stay

Post by josie andrews »

Leeds prop Kylie Leuluai has postponed his retirement to sign a new one-year deal at Headingley.

Leuluai, 34, had previously announced plans to hang up his boots at the end of this campaign but will now play on after a fine start to the year, which sees him lead the Rhinos in average gains per carry.

Chief executive Gary Hetherington said: "When Kylie signed his last contract his intention was to return home at the end of this season but we always spoke about reviewing the situation nearer the time and seeing how his body was coping with the demands of Super League.

"He has been at the top of his game this season and we were pleased to speak to him and agree a new deal. Leeds fans have always loved their prop forwards, especially those who set the tone for the team with their actions on the field, and Kylie is certainly in that company."

Leuluai joined the Rhinos ahead of the 2007 season having played for Wests Tigers, Sydney Roosters, Parramatta Eels and Manly Sea Eagles in the NRL.

He has since made 170 appearances for the club and picked up four Super League Grand Final winners rings.

Last year, he played for the Exiles in the inaugural International Origin match, and he has also represented New Zealand Maori and Samoa at international level.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
