Looking Back - A thread for the owd uns!
With Ron sharing his memories of his first match in 1946, I thought I'd start a topic to talk about till the new season starts. So here goes.
Telephone boxes
As a kid, no-one had telephones in their homes. Those red telephone boxes were everywhere. There was even a Directory in each one which never got nicked for some reason.
It was an old bakelite handset and you inserted 4 old pennies then dialled a number. If anyone answered, you pressed Button A to speak. Otherwise, Button B gave you your money back!
When was the last time anyone on here used a callbox, or even saw anyone using one?

I think that in reality they were initially meant for Emergency calls since you didn't know anyone who had a phone.
The Police Box (Tardis) was also an emergency police call up.

I heard they'e started putting mobile defibrilators in ones in villages that are miles away form a hospital instead of phones
Ironically, to get to the defibrilator you have to phone someone up to get an access code.

Would have been no good to me, we never had a phone. In fact, if my dad ever used a phone in his life, I'd be very surprised!ancientnloyal wrote:I remember taking a few 10ps on scout trips to rng home (or childline)

In 1969 we moved to Aspull and our phone number was 6059, so easy to remember.

If anyone has title deeds to an older property, they may well contain letters from Wigan solicitors with 3 digit numbers.Ron Doran wrote:In 1969 we moved to Aspull and our phone number was 6059, so easy to remember.
Ron, can you remember who's telephone number was WHItehall 1212?
