Couldn't agree more. This whole season has resulted in a farce. To all Leeds fans, be thankful this comp exists because you are nothing more than a mid to average team.

This will have a knock-on effect throughout Super League. Any Whino fan buying a season ticket will be doing it out of gratitude and blind loyalty. Because they will continue to serve up the usual 27 rounds of garbage. Leeds are not deserving of support until August!

Re: The death of Super league.
When Wigan were in the win everything years the RFL brought in the salary cap to peg us back, when Wigan nearly went to the wall and DW rescued us the RFL were nowhere to be seen in rescuing the biggest club in the game, and now it's the RFL who now perceive that this playoff series is the best way forward.
Leeds are playing the percentages but there is nothing there to stop them from doing it, that's what playoff rugby is all about, I do believe in the grand final concept but it should be the top 4 who go to playoff rugby with the winner of the regular season league should go through to the grand final and the other three play off against each other with the winner playing at old Trafford, doing this would make team want to finish top and gives incentive to finish top to get the chance at old Trafford.
All the top eight playoff series does is put more coffers in to the RFL purse so I just can see anything changing coz money talks

Sadly Leeds are doing nothing wrong and SL collectively and individually is not strong enough to make teams pay for finishing low down and winning a small % of regular games.

Re: The death of Super league.
While the reffing standards are such a disgrace rugby league will continue to die. Silverwood was standing on the line. Peacock was a metre in front of him offside, nothing. Had that been Wire, penalty. However that is academic. When seasons are won or lost on poor refereeing the game becomes a farce. Oz realised one ref could not cope with today's speed of the game. Two refs game flows better. And no it does not ballence out over the season. Jim
Re: The death of Super league.
They will support the format to the death. They have won it twice in this format so even if they finish top next season and lose they will put the brave face on and claim they didn't deserve it.God wrote:Leeds fans will say were bitter, i say they are blinkered and cannot see past there own glory. They have no pride.
They would have to otherwise it would invalidate the two wins they have got.
Unfortunately there are a section of fans from other clubs who back the play offs regardless. They seem to think its modern and so must be better.
To my mind they really need to read the old Emperors New Clothes story. I think the cloth fits!

Re: The death of Super league.
Whatever happens we should go into every game to win it, it is the Wigan Way or such like. Finish top, be the best. After that it is simple knock out rugby which is a different competition but sadly one which tie's up the whole year. 5th best is best.

Re: The death of Super league.
I posted on this forum for the first time yesterday under the top " a joke" and pointed out that all the major sporting competitions around the world except for European and South American football decide their champions through a play-off system. As 70,000 people turned up to watch Saturday's game and there was extensive coverage on both BBC TV and radio news bulletins it's hard to see how this can be termed the death of Super League. The Rugby Union Premiership champions are decided by a play-off system and they seem to be doing o.k.
Arguably the biggest (in terms of gross revenue generated )league competition in world sport is the NFL in the USA.While they have a completely different league structure the Super Bowl is the ultimate play-off final in world sport with worldwide viewing figures only matched by the EUFA Champions Legue Final.
The last Super Bowl was won by the New York Giants who only won 56% of their regular season games but won 3 play-off games to reach the final to defeat the New England Patriots who has won 86% of their regular season games.
Was there a massive outcry throughout America that they weren't worthy champions and that the NFL was finished as a competition. Not on your life

Re: The death of Super league.
The NFL is the best sports league in the world in the way it is run. I feel its a shame that we copped out of following a closer model to this model when we started the Super League, for the sake of the history and heritage of small town clubs and because we can't overcome regional / town rivalries and bitterness. In America you get a lot of people who are just fans of the NFL more so than being of any particular team is as passionate a way as we are in this country, and that is a cultural thing that we've never really attempted to change - it would be hard to change unfortunately.nfl wrote:I posted on this forum for the first time yesterday under the top " a joke" and pointed out that all the major sporting competitions around the world except for European and South American football decide their champions through a play-off system. As 70,000 people turned up to watch Saturday's game and there was extensive coverage on both BBC TV and radio news bulletins it's hard to see how this can be termed the death of Super League. The Rugby Union Premiership champions are decided by a play-off system and they seem to be doing o.k.

Re: The death of Super league.
i'd move to a conference baed system like we used to have in RL. This would help make the conferences meaningfull to fans (you are playing to finish top against your nearest rivals) whilst not implying that you are the best overall team. Playoff wildcard position keep the season active for most teams throughout the season. Play inter-conference matches to vary the matchups a bit and you've got a good structure. The other thing this allows is unlimited expansion if you need to do it. You can have as many teams as you like, or as few as you like. The conferences don't have to have the same number of teams in them. The teams don't have to play one antoher the same number of times.
The playoffs then decide the best team and seem to be a big thing, because now you are going up against the best from the whole competition.
If you think this is too radical - remember the RFL was structured like this in the past.
