Got something to discuss about RL in general? Then this is the place to post it.

Salford City Reds sack head coach Phil Veivers

Post by josie andrews »

It appears the club has finally lost patience with Veivers after the team suffered a heavy 12-44 home loss to London Broncos on Friday

Salford City Reds have 'stood down' head Coach Phil Veivers with immediate effect.

In a statement on the club's official website it was confirmed that Veivers would no longer coach the team after a run of poor form.

The Reds won just one game since July and have conceded almost 200 points in five games during this Super League campaign, while notching up just 62 in return.

It appears the club has finally lost patience with Veivers after the team suffered a heavy 12-44 home loss to London Broncos on Friday.

Reds’ CEO Ed Farish said: “We have had to look at the whole business and what is right for the Club. The results speak for themselves and it was felt a change must be made to allow our progression to continue on the field as well as off it.

“In the last month we have undergone major changes with the departures of Director of Football Steve Simms and Commercial Director Tina Wilkinson.”

“We thank Phil for his efforts during an extremely difficult close season and wish him all the best for the future.”

Head of Youth Development Alan Hunte will take over the coaching duties in the interim with the Reds set to travel to Wakefield Trinity Wildcats next Sunday.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Think it's a bit harsh seeing what has gone on at the club over the last several months.

The players & the other coaches are as much to blame if this is what the doctor sees as wrong with the set up.

Steve Simms should be axed IMO he's stealing a living

Can't say I'm surprised but it is a harsh move and undermines everything he's tried to do. I'm fairly sure that many other coaches would have faired no better given what the club was going through.

Sims has already gone Josie. Whether Phil Vievers was the coach to eventually lead Salford to 'glory' who knows BUT nobody could have worked a miracle and made a club with no close season, very few players immediately into even competitive. Whomever takes charge Salford may as well write this season off.

I am not sure what Koukash expects this season given the players he has.

His attempts to sign players who are simply not available and now this are worse than anything Mo Lindsay got up to.

Whoever he appoints as coach is going to be in the same boat and Koukash needs to realise he can't magic up several quality players just because he has a big cheque book. There just aren't that many around and few if any would be interested in joining Salford.

What is he going to do if they lose their next five games (which is by no means improbable)?

You're right Dave. For a so-called successful businessman he seems to have undertaken very little research into running a rugby league club. Is he even aware of the salary cap?

Koukash may think getting a top name coach, with a good past record, in say the NRL, will lead to top players wanting to go there.

I suppose if he's putting his money into the venture, he wants some return even if its just to make the club more marketable and attract more fans through the gates.

I would imagine, especially with Graeme Lowe as his right hand man, they probably have a plan in place to get the man they want - Lowe certainly knows his RL even if Koukash is new to it all.

Wonder if he's got Tim Sheens in his sights?
