Tigers make extra player complaint against City Reds

Post by josie andrews »

Castleford Tigers claim Salford City Reds had 14 players on the field for a crucial spell towards the end of Saturday’s 34-30 defeat.

Tigers have contacted the RFL over the alleged mix-up, which they say occurred in the 76th minute of the game when Salford were defending their line. Castleford chief executive Steve Gill claimed three plays took place while Reds had an extra man, before prop Darrell Griffin was eventually taken off.

Meanwhile, Tigers are closing in on a new coach. Gill said a shortlist of four has been drawn up and will be discussed at a board meeting tonight.

Back-row forward Tyrone McCarthy has joined Tigers on a month’s loan from Warrington Wolves and is set to make his debut at home to Hull KR on Sunday. Irish international McCarthy – who has made four substitute appearances for Wolves this year and also played on dual-registration with Swinton Lions – said: “It’s a massive opportunity for me to get some Super League game time and hopefully pick up a bit of form. We’re going into a World Cup at the end of the season and I want to be playing at the highest level.

“I’m grateful to Cas for giving me this opportunity and I aim to repay them with my performances.”

Salford face RFL sanctions for fielding 14 players during Castleford win

Salford are facing possible repercussions from the RFL for fielding 14 players during a crucial period of their 34-30 Super League victory over Castleford on Saturday.

The Tigers noticed the discrepancy and have lodged a complaint with the RFL, who are expected to make a statement over the matter on Wednesday.

Castleford chief executive Steve Gill has claimed three plays took place while the Reds had an extra man on the field of play after making a substitution four minutes from time.

Salford went on to secure the victory that took them off the foot of the table in Brian Noble's first match in charge since take over at the Salford City Stadium.

There is no precedent that would see Cas awarded the points from the contest but the Reds may face a fine or a points deduction if the RFL rules they are in breach of its operational rules.

Some question's need to be asked why it was not spotted by the reserve official on the touchline who keeps check on the number of substitution's.

Salford charged by Rugby Football League over player error

SALFORD have been charged with a breach of regulations after they fielded 14 players for a period during their 34-30 win over Castleford in coach Brian Noble’s first Super League match.

Castleford chief executive Steve Gill has claimed that three plays took place while the Reds had an extra man after making a substitution four minutes from the end last Saturday’s match.

Salford held on for a win that lifted them off the foot of the table.

The Tigers lodged a formal complaint with the Rugby Football League, who said today the matter will be dealt with by an RFL operational rules tribunal next Wednesday.

If Salford are found guilty of breaking the rules, they could be fined or even docked competition points if there is a case of “misconduct which impinges on the integrity of the competition”.

In 2006, St Helens were charged with misconduct after a similar incident against Hull and later fined £100.

However, in 2009 NRL outfit Canterbury Bulldogs forfeited winning points against Penrith for fielding 14 players during their 28-26 victory.

Salford chief executive Ed Farish said: “We’ll be co-operating fully with the League in their efforts to clear the matter up.”
