Tomkins urged to reject Warriors, stay at home
Wigan coach Shaun Wane has publicly pleaded with Sam Tomkins not to join the Warriors or any other NRL club.
Super League's current Man of Steel has been in incredible form this season, scoring 29 tries for Wigan so far this campaign, 15 of them in his past five games.
The Warriors are leading the race to bring him Down Under and it's believed they are prepared to fork out around $1 million a season to secure the northern hemisphere's hottest player, including paying a substantial transfer fee.
However, Wane wants Tomkins to turn down the Warriors' advances and stay at Wigan.
"He seems to be getting better and in the last few games he has been outstanding," Wane told UK media.
"He is really competitive and blinkered.
"He is very mature in his will to win, how he trains and how he looks after himself.
"You hear all the rumours about him moving but he is a Wigan player and loves playing under me.
"It is great for the sport that we've got someone like Sam. We should embrace it and keep him here as long as possible. He has consistently been superb."
There is an added significance to Wane saying he wants Tomkins to stay at Wigan, because he has also recently been linked to a move to Warriors.
It has been reported in Australia for the past two weeks that Wane could come in as Matt Elliott's replacement.
Bringing Wane to the Warriors may further tempt Tomkins to come to Auckland but, if there was any truth to the rumours that Wane would be taking over, he would hardly be publicly calling for Tomkins to stay in England.
