Huddersfield Giants captain Danny Brough has ruled himself out of contention for England for the end-of-season World Cup.

The 30-year-old goalkicking half-back last night ended the long-running debate over his international future after another impressive performance in the Giants' 25-16 win over St Helens appeared to put him in contention for England's game against the Exiles on Friday week.

England coach Steve McNamara will announce his squad for the mid-season game at 2pm today but Brough has already made his mind up to reject any call-up.

Instead, he has pledged his allegiance once more to Scotland, for whom he qualifies through his grandfather and captained in the 2008 World Cup in Australia.

Brough was persuaded to switch allegiance by McNamara and selected for the second of last year's two games against the Exiles but he was omitted from the autumn international series and did not make this season's elite training squad.

He revealed he has already made himself available to Scotland coach Steve McCormack after becoming disillusioned over his treatment by McNamara.

"I don't want to be in it," he said. "That's definite. I'm not playing second fiddle every year.

"I'm going to play for Scotland if I get the opportunity. I've spoken to Steve and told him I'm available.”

I would echo Tony Smith's comments on this one;

'Ex-England coach Tony Smith has backed Steve McNamara's decision to omit Danny Brough from his squad, claiming the player has "shown the wrong attitude". Brough said he had grown tired of not being picked for the national team.
"That's exactly why you wouldn't pick him," said Smith.


Anybody should be really honoured and privileged to represent their country, and if they're asked to sit behind somebody or compete with somebody, overcome them and show a great attitude - that's what we're after as coaches.'

What Tony Smith is saying is that he should feel honoured to be in the mix, and regardless of what he does at his club, he has to have the attitude once he's in the mix, to show he is the best man for the job. If he thinks he's too good to do that, the he has the wrong attitude.

Showing good form at a good club with good players around you is one thing. Showing good form at a club with players that are average is another. Do you think Richie Myler would be anywhere near an international call up if he plied his trade at the London Broncos?

Rangi Chase leads the league in try assists in a team that is ten places below Huddersfield and who have scored far fewer tries. I wouldn't pick Chase for England, purely on the fact he isn't English, but as he is in, Brough would have to show he is a better man.

If a player in form like Brough isn't being picked then it's a for a reason. Trouble finds Brough magnetic-like, he's a sh*tstirrer, his off field recreational interests are unwanted and a bad influence and he won't take one for the team.

I wouldn't touch him with a barge pole.

Just one thought, does anybody find Tony Smith the Australian who became British a tad hypocritical ?

Are you sure you are talking about Brough and not Chase At least he's British.
We've all slagged Macbanana and if we as fans are passionately anti his team selection ie automatic Sinfield at half back, don't you think the players know the score. The top players in any sport have to have a certain amount of self belief and arrogance (for want of a better word). They want to play at the top level and when knowing the National coach is automatically going to pick someone in your position who is not as good, wouldn't you be disheartened?

Why?

Because he is playing the best RL of his career in a team that is flying high in the SL only to know he is going to be behind a New Zealander and a Loose Forward for HIS country?
