Shaun Wane: Big names are needed for a Giants killing

Wigan boss Shaun Wane hopes to have his big guns back for Friday night’s top of the table shootout with Huddersfield Giants.

Sam Tomkins, Liam Farrell and Pat Richards all missed Wigan’s hard-earned win over Hull KR last time out.

Skipper Sean O’Loughlin also picked up a calf injury during the Rovers clash but Wane expects to field a near full strength side against the Giants.

Wane wants Wigan in top spot going into the play offs and is keen to land the League Leaders Shield.

“We want to win everything that is winnable,” said Wane. “Friday’s game is so important.”

Wane’s men have already booked their ticket to this month’s Challenge Cup Final but the Wigan coach says Wembley is not on his mind.

“I am not looking beyond Huddersfield and hopefully key players will be back for us,” he added.

“We then face the Catalan Dragons. We will start thinking about the Challenge Cup and Wembley nearer the time.

“We have plenty of rugby to play before we prepare to play Hull at Wembley.

“My immediate concern has to be Huddersfield for what is a huge game for both clubs.”

The Warriors responded to a half-time blast from Wane to secure a 21-16 victory against Hull KR.

He was not happy with a patchy first-half performance but saluted his team’s honesty and determination.

Wane said: “Rovers made it tough for us and I knew they would because they have been playing well of late.

“I found a few of the refereeing decisions somewhat baffling both for and against us but we got a win and that’s what matters.

“The players are an honest bunch and they knew at half-time we had to improve. We will certainly have to be at our best against the Giants.

“Huddersfield have plenty of quality in their ranks and they have played well this year.

“There have been times this season when we have been busted through injury – it’s been the same for all clubs – but we have kept going.

“Players who have come into the side have done well. I gave young Joe Burgess his full debut against Rovers and thought he did very well.

“He’s a good kid and I just wish he could have got over for a try at the end – he certainly came close.

“The spirit in the side is terrific and here we are at the business end of the season with so much to play for.”

Wane also likes what he sees in the make-up of young full-back Ryan Hampshire who is yet another product of the Wigan club’s highly successful youth system.

Outstanding

“Ryan has done everything asked of him and he is another good kid,” said Wane. “We have so many and it’s good to see.”

Wane knows Wigan will have to keep close tabs on Huddersfield play maker Danny Brough who has been in outstanding form.

Former Wigan chairman Maurice Lindsay has already called for England coach Steve McNamara to consider pairing Brough with Sam Tomkins at half back for the World Cup. Tomkins himself rates Brough highly but the Giants star is adamant he does not want to pull on an England shirt.

Lindsay says he would also have Tomkins at stand off at international level.

Huddersfield also rested players in Sunday’s win over Salford.

Gutted about us missing these 3 players! Especially SOL.

Would of liked wane to play Hampshire in the halves but looks like it'll be powell who hasn't had much game time for a while! Powell and an out of sorts Green without Lockers will make for an average attack im afraid.

Hope im wrong.

Not sure if he's been dropped, as the official site says he's a knee knock from HKR.

I'd have played Hampshire instead but he's gone for Powell. Hampshire has more pace than Powell which would have been useful against their halves, more so with Lockers missing. But Powell's never let us down.

Not quite as optimistic about this one now - crowd help will be important more than ever to get us over the line.

My views also. Could be a long night tonight at the DW.

Powell is solid rather than offering that little X factor I think Hampshire does.

Sam is the only player with any flair in the 19 so I'd expect Hudds to gang up on Sam with little fear of anything much springing up from elsewhere.

Another young player I think has that little extra is Williams but we have only seen him once in the first team.

I have nothing aginat Powell but why does Wane seem to prefer him over the other young players? He may be a bit more mature physically but his just doesn't strike me as one to pull something out of the hat.

Probably play a blinder now I have said that :)
