The bulldogs have said that they will have to "pull a rabbit out of a hat" to keep him on at the end of the season because they simply wont be able to afford his contract upgrades!

It is a bit stupid replacing an extremely highly paid player with another instead of going for a few top quality potential players on short term deals, some things have to be chanced! Although it would be brilliant to have a player like SBW on board, is it really worth it?

Yes because he only takes one slot up on the 20/20.

If we sign two or three players using Farrell's salary there won't be any room under the 20/20 to give our younger players a pay rise to take them beyond £20K a year.

For the rest of this season we could do with a couple of loan players. Next season the club needs to be very careful before going off and signing players in case they fill the 20/20 thus slamming the door in the face of the likes of Allen, Colbon and Coyle.

They and several others may be able to command more then £20K a year by next season if they continue to perform well. If Wigan can't pay them more because of the 20/20 despite having money available under the salary cap, it will easily be outbid for their services.

Can you imagine the anger on here if we end up releasing Hansen and Allen for a couple of 30 year old Aussies?

SBW is a different kettle of fish so bringing him in or someone of the class of Lockyer is good for the team despite the fact it may mean releasing someone and it is, as I said before, only one slot on the 20/20.

If we don't want a superstar in the team I'd assess how good we think these kids are toward the end of this season before signing anyone as we will have Hock and O'Loughlin back for 2006.

Good point Proud Pie... but as I have said in another post SBW is an amazing player...he could make an average team into a great one. I don't want to start up the Orr thing again, but if I'm right then we will need a stand-off...but I would not sacrifice this against SBW... Moran who is a player to backup would get a pondful of tries from him and who knows...this could help Orr... no it's toughto balance quantity against quality...one player doesn't make a team but it can certainbley tip the balance.
too true, I think SBW would have a massive effect on the Wigan team, his field influence would be similar to Farrells, lifting the team with on field influence and the players knowing they have a scoring machine on board. However, thats not always good as the team could fall appart when beleiving they only have one player to rely on if SBW is out! Im still not convinced he is worth it!

problem is hes not nearly 30, injury prone and apparantly "world class"

I dont think SBW will come over here, hes not stupid hes keeping the rumours alive with "big money moves" to up his money in australia, think about it, why would a 19year old kid move half way round the world when he can get big mooney in australia and come over here in a few years. If he goes anywhere my guess is the roosters.
