Wane is wanted to command England

Post by josie andrews »

SHAUN Wane is set to be approached about the England coaching job.

The RFL is seeking a new boss for the national team after Steve McNamara took a role as assistant coach at NRL champions Sydney Roosters.

McNamara’s contract with the RFL, which has now expired, was full-time but the game’s governing body looks set to appoint a part-time successor.

And that would allow him to continue his duties with Wigan. He is out of contract at the end of 2014 but chairman Ian Lenagan has publicly stated he would be offered an extension.

Wane guided Wigan to the top of the league in his first year in charge of his hometown club, and backed that up by registering a trophy-double last season. He has been praised for promoting homegrown players.

He admitted last week he would be interested in the post if it became available. McNamara has not been formally ruled out, but the RFL is thought to prefer a new man. Leeds coach Brian McDermott is also in the frame ahead of an expected Four Nations Down Under next year.

Wigan’s assistant coach Paul Deacon and head of sports science, Mark Bitcon, had roles with England during the World Cup.

l WIGAN yesterday confirmed they will face Leigh in a pre-season friendly on Sunday, January 19 at the Sports Village (3pm).

A Warriors reserve side will travel to London Skolars on Jan 24 and Wigan will face St Helens on Jan 30. They open their Super League defence on February 7 at home to Huddersfield.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Maybe the club complained? Reading it again, it has no provenance whatsoever. Its just speculation disguised as fact!

So you have a coach operating in Australia, who cannot watch players play, because he is half the world away, picking the team on reputation rather than current form. Well no change there then.
