Wildcats ask for ground help

Post by josie andrews »

Wakefield Trinity Wildcats have been forced to cut their ground capacity by more than half to 5,333 after being told to carry out structural repairs to the Rapid Solicitors Stadium.

The Wildcats are asking for volunteers to carry out the work, the need for which came to light following an annual review of the stadium's safety certificate.

Wakefield's consultant chief executive Kath Hetherington said: "We will be doing everything within our power to get the stadium to a point where we can operate at an increased capacity as soon as possible and in order to do that we are asking for the support of volunteers.

"Any builders, engineers or indeed anyone simply with time on their hands who can contribute to the works are asked to contact the club.

"We have just over 2,000 season ticket holders so we envisage the capacity being sufficient for the first few home games of the season.

"We hope to be operating at an increased capacity for the Good Friday derby against Castleford Tigers, however, this is not something we can put a specific timescale on and if it takes longer then so be it."

Wakefield are still hoping to move to a purpose-built new stadium near the M62 but are resigned to being at their ageing Belle Vue ground for the next two seasons.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

Not sure whats worse. The ground being unsafe or only selling 2K season tickets. They averaged over 7k last season and aren't anticipating full ground being open until Cas derby at Easter. Its a massive deal for a club who already haven't got their overseas signing in yet and had to seel most of their best players to pay bills/wages at the back of last year. I'm concerned for Wakefield, whilst down the road Fev have two new/recycled stands up!

I've thought for a while that Fev Rovers deserve a shot at SL, sounds like they're better equipped for it stadium wise and financially than at least Wakey and possibly even Cas.

A good example of why they should merge and create one good top class club for the City of Wakefield in which all three club's are situated.

Now that the pits have gone, no longer the same amount of money in that area to sustain three clubs.
