Tomkins to miss Warriors NRL

Post by josie andrews »

All but three of the 16 players named in the Warriors' squad for the inaugural Auckland Nines competition will feature in the club's first NRL pre-season game at North Harbour Stadium.

Sunday's fixture against Gold Coast is followed three days later by a game against Super League outfit Wigan in Hamilton before completing their schedule against Brisbane in Dunedin on February 23.

Sandwiched between that schedule is the Nines tournament on February 15-16.

"We have a lot of football in front of us in the space of eight days, so it's a bit of a jigsaw puzzle putting all our sides together," coach Matt Elliott said.

The team to face the Titans comprises 13 of his Nines squad along with players from the under-20 squad and three from the Auckland Vulcans.

The three Nines squad members who won't play are recruits Sam Tomkins (Wigan) and Jayson Bukuya (Cronulla) and playmaker Shaun Johnson.

Trial squad: Jordan Baldwinson, Ray Faitala-Mariner, Glen Fisiiahi, David Fusitua, Charlie Gubb, Konrad Hurrell, Sebastine Ikahihifo, Solomone Kata, Ngani Laumape, Mason Lino, Metia Lisati, Sam Lisone, Tuimoala Lolohea, Sione Lousi, Suaia Matagi, Agnatius Paasi, Abraham Papalii, Nathaniel Peteru, Dominique Peyroux, Michael Sio, Carlos Tuimavave, Albert Vete.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan
