Is wing a specialist position?

Post by cpwigan »

On the showing of Thornley it certainly is. I have high hope for Thornley as a centre BUT he really need to show signs of improvement.

I would say even gelling as a winger would be better. The reality is IMO Manfredi earned a spot tonight, or rather should have!

When the site team selection came out I chose dan on the right wing instead of josh and joe on the left wing as paddys replacemdnt with iain and daz in the centres. Joe looked well out of it on the right wing tonight.

I said the same thing last night cp that maybe we have underestimated the importance of specialist wingers but thinking on is there only Charley who fits the senior winger bill? Meaning this will be a problem all season?

Dan Sarginson played wing for london Broncos.
A better option than Thornley? who seems a more settled centre.
Jack Hughes has also played centre and doesn't lack pace which would also allow sarg on to the wing.

The Sargemeister prefers the centre spot!
Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

We will have, he's called Josh Charnley.

Horses for courses for me, we shouldn't be selecting centres on the wing or props at loose forward unless needs must and if we do then we should be amending our game plan.

Sarginson and Thornley should be challenging for the centre spot, the loser should not be plonked on the wing. Jack Hughes needs to get a run in the pack reverting him to centre will, in my opinion be detrimental to his progression.

But are you not missing the point of this thread to say just put x player on the wing?, I think what cp is saying is that it's simply not good enough to have makeshift wingers it's a specialist position in its own right

WF understands my point and it obviously came about from last night. There are some players who seem ok playing in two positions. Tate and Boyd. Interestingly, as in the case of Boyd and Hayne, fullbacks seem to play wing better than centres moving out to the wing.

We have 3 specialist wingers IMO; Josh, Burgess & Manfredi. One thought I had watching last night with McGilvray was that height for defusing bombs was not a key nor did we test him out much when we had the ball. Thornley seemed too slow off the mark and too big (?) diving over and past him on one occasion. So Tierney to wing? Murphy (? played plenty wing at academy level).

I think somebody mentioned it elsewhere. Sarge is a real positive in the main BUT his defence whilst less of a liability is still weak on contact (tad grabby) and not aggressive/decisive (Centre & Wing are a real test defensively)

One thing I found myself thinking last night was that there were too many players in that team that I would consider to be NOT NATURAL RL PLAYERS (primarily because they are relatively inexperienced RL players) with Sarge / Clubb / Dudson / Flower even possibly Smith who played a lot of football as a junior.
