Wane fumes at Saints boss Brown

Post by josie andrews »

A WAR of words erupted between Shaun Wane and Nathan Brown following St Helens’ 16-12 victory at Wigan.

Brown prompted the controversy when he let rip at Wane in the post-match press conference, accusing him of influencing Phil Bentham with his remarks about officials over the past few weeks.

“Bentham had an absolute shocking performance,” said Brown. “Waney’s been whinging for the last two months, and then we cop it up the backside today. We never ring Jon Sharp (the referee’s boss), we don’t complain after any game, and then we get a performance like that because other coaches are putting the referees under pressure.”

The outburst left Wane visibly shocked.

And he vented his frustrations immediately afterwards, challenging the game’s governing body to cite Brown after letting him escape punishment for labelling Ben Flower a ‘head-hunter’ earlier this year.

“Absolute disgrace,” Wane said. “Absolute garbage, that’s all I want to say. Absolute garbage… Nathan Brown shouldn’t be allowed to say stuff like that.

“He came out with garbage before we went to Sydney about head hunters, and he got away with that.

“It’s just disgraceful that he comes out with things like that. It shouldn’t be allowed. I’m fuming, to be honest.”

The war of words will only serve to intensify the rivalry between the two heavyweights should they meet in the play-offs.

Anyone can support a team when it is winning, that takes no courage.
But to stand behind a team, to defend a team when it is down and really needs you,
that takes a lot of courage. #18thMan

I can see where Wane is coming from easily but he'd have been far better keeping calm and being more reasoned about it rather than be "fuming". He could still make his points.

Brown I have no respect for at all. No class whatsoever. He's obviously trying to influence the media and possibly the RFL and Wilken and Wellens are happy to help him on the pitch as they yak at the referee in the same way.

Why do Saints attract such tossers as coaches?

Brown's remarks amount to criticism of the referee and could cost him a deal of money.
All that would have been noted by the match commisioner who attends all after match press conferences and it will go in his report to the RFL.
Saints came out with a game plan to pressure the ref by taking the game to the limit. They conceded loads of pens in doing so but won the game so it paid off. Brown was probably trying to deflect from his game plan but it sounds like he has overstepped the mark by remarks.

The penalty count was 4-0 in our favour and rightly so until Wellens and Wilkin did their cry baby double act and wow did things change then!!

Unfortunately RL is becoming as bad as football with players like Wellens and Wilkin mouthing off to the referee.Bentham should have put them in their place early in the game but he lacks the courage to do so.As for Brown he is forever using these outbursts to get sympathy for his team.Wane however should keep his mouth shut and not get involved in arguing with a coch who has won nothing.

He's got a cheek when Bentham aided by Hick help Saints to win.

In the build up to the second try by Saints, there was a forward pass which was blantantly ignored and the later on, Saints were awarded a penalty in our half for a high tackle which was nowhere near as bad as some of the high tackles and other foul offence's by Saints he allowed to go unpunished.

And if the Saints number eight is allowed to continue tackling like he did at times, a player is going to be badly injured.

Masoe has had a rocket shoved up his backside for the dire performances he's been putting in most of the season.
Last night was a typical reaction of derby match thuggery that we are used to from neanderthal players like him.
In the earlier derby match he ran in with a very high raised knee at the end of the game which could have broken scott taylors ribs. Nothing was reported on that incident which like last night thuggery was disgraceful.

Mason seemed to be going out to deliberately try to injure players in the tackle.

From where I was in the West Stand last night it looked to me as if he went in with his knee into George Williams. I have. Not seen it back on TV yet though.
