8 point try

Do these dummies on Sky realise what they are suggesting? I totally agree that Smith's action warranted his removal from the game but for Stevo and Clarkey to suggest that a further penalty should have been awarded (even though the rules of the game do not allow it) is ridiculous! Let us flip the situation on its head, had a Widnes player been found guilty of foul play after the ball had been grounded, would they have been screaming for the try to be disallowed and a penalty awarded to Wigan? I think not!

Exactly, and again last night showed their usual bias against Wigan.

I do think it raised a legitimate issue though. Are the rules in that situation right? It was clearly foul play by us however we want to see it. Whilst that foul play was punished with a yellow card, in all other points of the game other than after a try the team could would get a penalty. I'm not saying they should have had a penalty under the sticks, but the rules in that instance were in our favour as we got to do the normal kick off.

The rules prevent it but whether the rules are correct is a different matter. Sadly Smith should have been dismissed for violent conduct and suspended.

IIRC anywhere on the pitch, once the ball is dead a penalty can not be awarded.
The match review panel will still be looking at this incident and we could lose Matty's services for a few games.

I'd perhaps enforce the penalty on the kick-off. So rather than us kicking to them, they had a differential penalty on half way.

Other dead ball situations are not so clear cut. However, Im sure penalties are given for retaliation - even when the ball is dead after the first offense.

When was the last time a penalty was awarded against a team scoring a try for foul play? Answers on a postcard please. Sky aremaking a mountain out of a mole hill because this is Wigan!

According to Wikipedia (aka Thickipedia, so this may not be correct)

"In rugby league, an 8-point try is awarded if the defending team commits an act of foul play as the ball is being grounded. The try is awarded, and is followed by a conversion attempt, in-line from where the try was scored, and then a penalty kick from in front of the posts".

As Matty Smith booted the Widnes player after the try had been awarded, this still would not apply to the Widnes debacle.

That's the suggestion I'd make too. You could extend it to the penalty being awarded to the fouled team at the spot where the game would restart.
